backup xp restore to win7

Hey guys, upgrading my sys from xp to win7.
Have backed up everthing to separate hdd using xp's own backup.
After in upgrade to win 7 will I be able to restore from backup created earlier if I end up with clean install of os?
Are there issues I need to be aware of?

You will need a special Microsoft tool to read an NT backup file in vista/7 or 8, you will only be able to restore files and not programs.

So to clarify, if backup was everything,this must be programs and folders.
On restore would any of the backup be restorable or only some parts?
What would be the best backup to avoid this issue when upgrading to win7?

You will be able to restore any files but not the system state which includes the registry so while you might restore programs files they won't be able to run.

How about trying to restore it into a partition and copying your files from there.
