Hi all,

I have a freeagent Seagate 500GB external which is formatted to take windows files etc. I have a Mac laptop ushally i just connect vie wifi and transfure files. BUT i've been trying to do this to backup my music and it takes ages.

my question is:

Can i partition the external and use it on both windows and Mac OS? + i dont want to loose any data on the drive

You're connecting across the WLAN to the Windows machine and sending the stuff that way?

What filesystem (NTFS or FAT32) is the external drive formatted with? If it's FAT32 then the Mac will be able to read and write to it directly if it's NTFS however the Mac will be able to read it but not write to it.

Therefore if the drive isn't FAT32 already the best option is to format it as such. That will delete all the data on the drive so the question is - is this a backup (ie you have another copy of everything that's on it) or just a file dump? Obviously if it's the former then you format away (using something other than windows to get past the 32Gb FAT32 limit), for the latter Partition Magic will do a format conversion but I wouldn't recommend doing that without a proper backup in place.
