Hi,

The company I currently work for are looking into replacing our current BackupExec 11d software with BackupExec 12.5. I've heard mixed reviews about 12.5 being a bit of a bugger to setup. What are other peoples experiences of it?

I believe that it offers a Centralised Administration tool called CASO - any body used it?

Cheers

I had no problems moving from 11d to 12.5, although I did a rebuild of the server it ran on rather than an in-place upgrade. To be honest, other than the new agents for backing up Hyper-V etc, I didn't really find it to be any different. Hopefully somebody who has done an in-place upgrade who can offer greater insight.

The only issues I've had with 12.5 is relating to 2008 SBS as it doesnt like being on the same server as exchange.

So they've changed from the version naming convention and now joining the bandwagon and just doing it yearly?

Upgrading from 11d is fine.

Any of the previous versions need a full uninstall + reinstall.

Edit: Version 10 can be patched up to 11d -> 12.5, but I have had problems with this, just to clarify.

Guess so but who changes their backup software every year anyways?

Our is every 3 years with a new tape drive.
I upgrade to the latest version of Backup Exec a few weeks after getting notification of it's release. More often than not the new version includes a new agent type or other feature that is beneficial. I suppose I like making work for myself, though :)

You must have a very easy going FD or not many servers then. That or you get it for free via software maintenance
