Backwards radiator??

Recently moved into a new house and one of the radiators is permanently cold. Weird thing is though it is only one radiator (all the others are fine) and whilst the in pipe with the open/close valve on remains stone cold the out pipe heats up as normal. When we fired up the heating a few weeks ago to make sure it all worked the radiator in question did heat up then, so it has worked in the past. This has confused me immensely! Any ideas? My plumbing skills extend as far as bleeding, which I have tried but hasn't worked.

Don't panic. I had this problem before, I can't remember how I fixed it so can't offer a solution, but I did.

iirc I bled all the radiators in the house, repressurised the system and checked ensured the valve was fully open.

Most of those valves are bidirectional these days so there isn't really an in and out as such.

I had the towel rail/radiator in my bathroom suddenly stop working. I was trying to adjust it to a decent temp, as it was only midly warm, and had two little knobs on it, neither with any labeling. So i tried turning one each way and then both each way etc, and it only ever got colder, then didn't heat up again whichever way they were turned.

Told letting agency and they sent a guy round. He had to come back the next day as he needed to replace a valve on it, which meant draining the system.

Worked fine since.

Probably out of balance if bleeding hasn't helped.

On the other side of your TRV you should have lockshields - the idea of these is to balance the flow of water in the system so the heat isn't all sucked up by a couple of rads which get boiling and then the others getting cold.

Google for balancing a heating system, it's difficult to explain. The idea is basically to shut the valves on and fanny about opening them and adjusting until all the rads get to an even temp.

Edit: Out pipe is hot you say? Could be a dodgey TRV then, jammed? Give it a beating and a greasing to loosen it up or replace it.

Thanks I'll have a look later. I don't think it has one of those valves on it, it's just a basic one with a + and - on it showing which way to turn. If it is a stuck valve shouldn't the pipe leading to it be hot?
