Hi all,

I'm wondering why my system doesn't run all games at 1080P and 60HZ

i7 ivybridge 3.5 ghz
8GB 1866Mhz DDR3
980GTX
500GB Sandisk SSD
Win 7 64 bit

All my total war games have struggled with framerate with everything on max (going s far back as Empire). Map mode has worse framerate than battles. Battles on zoomed in close or with numbers over 3000 will cause stuttering.

Battlefield 4 doesn't run smooth on certain levels

Fallout 4 runs very badly in the city areas.

Far Cry 4 isn't smooth in certain areas

In general other games run ok, but as you can see - certain games do struggle and I want a system that runs everything on max.

I used to use a 2560x1600 monitor but I gave up on using it as my 680 struggled and I thought my 980 would chew through games - but it didn't

So my question is - what would help? Would RAM improve these games that struggle?

I checked CPU benchmarks and asides from the Haswell-E chipset my Ivybridge isn't that far behind newer i7's. I don't mind splashing out on a 1080 when it comes out, but the performance increase from my 680 to the 980 has honestly been barely noticeable and it's very frustrating when I spent over £500 on a new GPU in May 2015.

Any help would be appreciated.

I thought Totalwar was a killer on systems?

Fallout 4 - you've probably got some of the more pointless settings like Godrays set to Ultra? I've got mine on medium and I have Titan X

More RAM is better but won't really affect framerstes much.

I used ultra but when I zoomed in close shadows on the ground would flicker - as in huge sections of the ground and it just looked horrid.

I'll try t tweak the shadows i guess

Probably need to see a few more details of your rig mate. Mainboard , PSU etc

Your system should crush those games, the fact that you saw no increase from your GPU upgrade indicates an issue.

Have you

1)Checked your fps with afterburner etc?
2)Updated your nvidia drivers (including a proper uninstall of the previous driver set?
3)Fresh install of your OS?

Starter for ten....

Thanks for the replies. I found on battlefield that some of the newer expansion pack games had frame rate drops. The resolution scaling hasn't been altered past 100% as I know from Dayz that changing that would cripple my framerate.

That's a shame total war games are CPU limited. You'd think a game that's seemingly so CPU intensive would have such a fundamental flaw.

Sabertooth Ivybridge Motherboard
1000W OCZ Gold certified PSU

All drivers are up to date and OS has only recently been re-installed.

Usually if I feel I may not be getting the performance I think I should ill give firestrike, heaven etc a run to make sure that you're getting all the grunt required then run something like passmark to make sure there are no issues with CPU or memory.

I think it's a pretty good way of telling if something has gone wrong or you're just expecting too much.

Also get afterburner installed to see what your GPU and CPU usage is at in games and benchmarks, helps you to figure if you're bottlenecked.

I would definitely give overclocking a try if you have a K and a capable cooler.

I'd follow what Skyfall has said. Check the system is running at what it should be, that no background processes are sapping your performance, etc.
