Anyone know what that actually means? Or if i can do anything about it?

A restart usually lets it download on mine, happens sometimes but not often.
Failing that reinstall the program.

I use Spybot but haven't encounted this problem although I've seen those things listed before . When I update there is a list with 7 or 8 check boxed items , some of the those items are in the list and these are the ones I dont check . I only download the definitions and a few others , not the help files and librarys. Try updating the definitions to start with and gradually increase box by box [ticking one by one].That's the only thing I can suggest .If there is a problem with a corrupt program , uninstall it and then a re-install might be the answer.

I`ve had this problem before which I suspected was a dodgy file trying to stop this program from working as it should ( not that I`m paranoid ;) )

I fould the only way to get it working is to uninstal or delete all of the files in the spybots folders and then reinstall into the same directory.

Change where yo uare downloading it from, works for me

i'll second that. it usually fixes it for me.
i tend to specify "safer networking#2 Europe", as it seems to fail checksum less for me than some of the others.

This happens to me when I don't start the application using the 'Run as...' option when right clicking on the shortcut. I run the application as an administrator and can then successfully download all updates.

Again it is a known bug, choosing to download from the safer-networking locations gets rid ofthe problem.

Clearly some people dont believe so......

When updating, why do I get an error message that the "update is forbidden" / "bad checksum!!!"?

Many users have reported that they are not able to download updates. The 'Search for updates' reveals updates, but they cannot be downloaded. Often a 'HTTP Error 403' or 'bad checksum' is displayed. This has a simple reason - millions of people trying to download from the same server, which can't handle such a burden. In combination with the growing size of the detection file this is becoming a serious problem.
We are currently considering possibilities to improve the situation. This includes the search for additional servers and ways of more effective compression. At least one server will soon be added, others will follow hopefully.

In order to overcome the problem for now, if you try again, have a second look at the menu bar. It has a pull-down item to select a mirror. Click the arrow beside it, and select a different location, where you'll most probably have better chances to download.

Same for me, if I update using anything but Safer Networking, I get a bad checksum
