Bad CPU?

Evening lads/ladies

I posted a thread up a while ago, asking the questiong of whether my mate had a bad Motherboard.

Basically a mate of mine bought all the parts to build a new gaming PC....we got down to building it all and once complete went to turn it on, only to find the fans turned on for a second then it turned off after about 1 second.

Thinking it might be the PSU, we tried the PSU off my pc, only to get the same result.

If you removed the CPU 8-Pin ATX power cable, it would start up but wouldnt post and the moment you plugged back in the 8 Pin CPU power it would turn off.

Anyway, we RMA'd the MB and got a new one.....only to see that this has the same problem.

Now I know bad CPU's are rare as Unicorns, but would a duff CPU cause the PC to insta-shutdown the moment you hit the power button?

Details are: EVGA Z68 FTW Motherboard, Intel i5 2500k, 8GB Corsair RAM, 750 Watt OCZ PSU.

Did you always switch it off straight away after it shut down or did you leave it for a few seconds?

Have you tested the RAM?

Does anything else power up? HDDs? LED lights (if any)?

Could try resetting the CMOS battery.

Have you tried with nothing other than the CPU and RAM?
 
Yeah I've tried with a different PSU....the working one out of my PC and tried with 1 stick of RAM (both of them).

All the lights come on as if she's ready to go....hit the power button, she starts up for litterally 1 second then collapses and turns off, but all the MB lights stay on.

If you remove the CPU power and hit the power button, it starts up....but obviously wont post.

Really wierd??
 
checked cpu socket very closely and carefully for any bent pins? setup outside of the case to eliminate any shorts? setup on wooden or cardboard surface
 
Havent tried different RAM to be fair.

But why would bad RAM stop the motherboard even starting up? usually RAM may stop POST from completing.

This is almost a shorting issue. ( I've taken the MB out and put it on cardboard to make sure its not being shorted by the case.)

I havent checked the pins on the new board but on the orginal board they were fine.....but for BOTH motherboards to have the same problem.....sureley not?
 
yeah id forgotten this is the second board,does that board have onboard hdmi/dvi or rgb connectors? tried removing gpu and test with onboard graphics?

not sure if your using graphic card or not
 
It doesnt have intergrated graphics.....but I have tried it without a Graphics card (GXT 560) plugged in...same affect.

Anyway...I've managed to grab a spare i5 CPU from the office, so will test it tonight.....im 90% sure its the CPU...allthough its rare.
