The problem is on my wife's PC, couldn't connect to Internet wirelessly so I installed the full works from the adapter cd. This partly worked in that I got wireless connection but also lock ups.

I decided to remove the software but keep the drivers but for some crazy reason tried to abort the process.

This has left me with a machine that is in a "startup repair" cycle. I've tried the proper chkdsk and scannow which both appeared to complete successfully but the PC is still in the cycle and won't boot.

I did see a a message about removing a device attached to the computer etc. which set me thinking about physically removing the PCI adapter.

I'll try that and report back for information purposes but I'd be grateful if anyone has solved this without a re-install.

F8 gives me a list of options that all end in the startup repair window.
I'll keep trying different things though, I'm surprised how common this is though. Lots of sophisticated solutions none of which appear to work!

Have you tried a Linux boot disk? Just to save anything important.

Last time I had a crash while uninstalling driver I had to reinstall :(

That was my salvation in the end. I found a solution which was to download from Neosmart a linux iso which burnt to a boot, diagnostic and repair disc, money back guaranteed!

I ran this and it assured me all was well now but when I booted I got a different system error message saying that
windows\system32\drivers\aswRvrt.sys was corrupt. The Win7 install disc couldn't fix this so I googled.

Turns out it's an Avast anti virus file thats notorious for screwing up systems.
Being an old git who still remembers DOS commands I was able to navigate to \drivers using the Win7 disc and delete it....result!
All is perfect now, I re-installed the adapter and it connects!

Now she says " it all went funny after I updated Avast"!

thanks for all the advice.

Now he tells me:D
I'll check that one out but at least I've got the commercial one tucked away now, just hope I don't have to use it anytime soon!
