In a few months I will be getting my own place (I currently live in shared accommodation) and will be looking at getting a place in or near Angel, Islington. My question is I can't find any ISP's that offer anything better than 18mb down 1mb up, Which is simply not going to work for me. My current connection is 80mb down 40mb up and I live in the north of Islington.

My current ISP does not offer services at any of the addresses I've checked in Angel, and the main ISP, BT only seem to offer slow DSL services when I try any address near where I will be moving.

I've tried all of the smaller ISP's such as Sky, Plus and 02 but they all seem to offer only DSL. I can't seem to find any cable providers in the UK that offer actual cable services, the only one I found was Virgin Media but they can only offer me speeds of "upto 20mbits" down a phone line and they don't tell me what upload speeds I can expect.

Is this country really still that far behind on internet connectivity? or am I missing something obvious?

The optical fibre is run to the green cabinet on the street. Sometimes (usually due to planning permission and NIMBY's, prevalent in Islington) they can't get the fibre to the cabinet, even if the exchange is listed as 'active'.

Large parts of Central London are not usually connected with FTTC due to planning and costs.
