Bad oblivion performance with 2900XT

What res and what settings, 16xAF aswell?, High shadows? all rest ultra?

yep 16xAF 2xAA (4xaa is smooth as well but the difference in AA is so minimal id rather have the extra fps)

high shadows everything else maxed as possible, some settings are on high as there is no ultra option for me. (high is the maximum setting, cant remember exactly what setting it is)

As i said before though dirt is quite cpu intensive and im not sure if the quad core is helping in that respect.

I wish I could get to the bottom of this, my performance in some games seems like total **** compared to others, doing my head in so bad now.

DiRT is mega cpu-intensive in my experience.

Demo was basically unplayable on the buggy track on my old 2.5ghz Venice, 2gig PC3200 cas2 rig, even in 640x480 low settings.

On my C2D @ 3.2ghz with the same gfx card (GTS320), it's much more playable in 1680x1050 medium settings. I'd estimate min fps has gone up by at least 30% (likely a lot more if I was still using lowest settings).

On the buggy track with my 1GB ram, Athlon 3700+ @ 2.8Ghz, 8800GTS at 620/980, on the buggy track at 1400x1050, 4xMS, 16xAF, all Ultra with high shadows my lowest fps was around 17fps, highest about 25, with the C2D lowest was about 30, highest around 40+, with my amd setup on the normal tracks my lowest was around 29.

just decided to do a defrag and the drive was completely scattered nearly completed so hopefully that should improve access times :).

What defrag program do you use?

I did have O&O defrag which is very good but atm im just using the bog standard windows one, should suffice for the time being.

Gtta say oblivion looks great with the natural environment mod:

i just put the low poly grass mod on my game of oblivion...mooching around Weynon Priory, i got an average of around 60fps (vsync) With 16xAF and 4xAA and in game settings on max, cept shadow filtering on low and self shadows off, will try again in a while with 8xAA

Thanks for the link above!

Just tried 8xAA... dragged it down from 60avg to about 25avg.. killed it!

So now im using 4xS and its so much smoother

Okay i'm a tool... how do i install it... do i stick the "meshes" folder in the "data" folder or do i copy all the individual files into the "data" folder?

copy the meshes folder into the data directory and if it asks to overwrite click yes.

I never had a meshes folder in the data directory to being with :(

Copying the folder into the data directory seems to make absolutely no difference whats soever, in fact... i reckon performance is possibly worse now

Hazarding a guess here, but does he he not mean copy the contents of the meshes folder into the data folder, not the actual folder itself?

My PC is still dead, and I haven't gotten around to fixing it.

Nope i meant copy the meshes folder into the data directory. Not sure why your performance hasnt improved though.

Try declocking your c2d to 3 gig. Maybe there are probs with the overclock causing your issue?

Matthew

I got 8 hours orthos stable at 3.2Ghz tho, but I suppose it's worth a try after I have re install Windows, defragged the HDD etc..

I'm only suggesting it as I have had probs with apparently stable clock on my C2D with one gfx card, then wierd results and crashes with another type (on a decent power supply as well).

Matthew

Do sata drivers loose more performance if not defragged on a regular basis compared to IDE? Coz it slows down a lot untill I defragged, never did with my IDE hdd's.

Not sure really but i find defragging is always a good thing whether or not your hdd has slowed down.
