Hey guys. Not really sure where to start. I have a belkin wireless 802.11g G+mimo router in a different room from the pc but its only about 6 metres away through 1 wall. In all online games I play, CSS, BF2 and COD4 my connection always drops after a while, sometimes its only after 5 mins sometimes 25.

My firewall is open to all said games so I was wondering if some sort of port forwarding for the apps would be required. If anyone could enlighten me on this I would be grateful. I don't really know anything about router congfiguration

btw I am using vista ultimate 32bit.

thanks

try it with ethernet

personally i wouldn't trust a belkin wireless router.. the wireless usb things they have are simply shocking, i've had to deal with them in work before :/

are you on adsl or cable?

might be worth replacing the router..

try newer drivers first, from the belkin site

hmm I see. Its a cable connection. I have an old netgear usb wireless stick thingy, maybe I'll see if that gives better performance. This router was only bought a month ago as a quick replacement for an older belkin router that my flatmates brought with them. I just went to a certain well known high street store for a new one as all of us needed internet access.

For future reference what routers should I be looking at?

Linksys WRT54GL and flash it with one of the various custom firmwares available, pretty decent option for around £45 if you have a cable connection.

As you're only a few meters away could you run a bit of cable into it, would certainly be better than any wireless.

chances are is could be the encrytpion on the wireless. I had an issue with vista and certain encryptions on the wireless (saying weak signal etc etc when the xp machines were fine). Try disabling Wireless encryption and trying, then if that works keep changing till you find one that works.

I believe WEP was the one giving me stick

get a WRT54GL and install Tomato firmware on it (very easy to do) (£35-40 ish)

i use this for gaming (even over wireless at the moment) and my pings are around 5-15 ms :)
