Bad performance in Half Life 1 and mods

I'm getting unplayable performance in Half Life 1 and its mods on my gaming laptop (i5 with GT540M so it should decimate it).

I've got the latest drivers, latest DirectX, and I found something that said you should set the CPU priority to low but that didn't help.

It works perfectly on my main rig. Ideas?

my mums 5 year old laptop can play hl 1 so somethings up what whats the speed of your i5 it maybe because it doesn't use more then one core and the speed of your i5 is too slow i doubt it like.

If all else fails try a reinstall or windows can you play on source games fine ?
