Hi,

I've just swapped out my old Asus P5Q Pro and Q6600 for a new Asus P8Z77 V LX mobo and a new i5 3570k. I'm still using my old xfired 5770's. All in my old Antec P182 case, along with my original Zalman ZM500 PSU.

Anyway, the problem is sometimes my power button does absolutely nothing.

Then on other times it does nothing for maybe 5 secs, then the comp starts.

Then 90% of the time its absolutely fine.

I don't think I have a broken wire, since for the last 4 yrs this case and psu have been 100% I think something weirder than that is going on here.

Like a problem on the mobo perhaps? I don't know for sure.

How can i properly prove its the mobo? Outside of buying a new PSU & case ? What about that little wire, what could I use to verify that everytime i'm hitting that power button the correct voltage signal is being sent to my mobo pins ?

Could it be something like a standby charge that the mobo is regulating ? Early days yet, but it doesn't seem to happen if i don't leave it for too long shutdown.

Also this morning, the only way I could get it started was pull the wire out of the back and back in, then boom, straight away it started.

Looking for idea's or suggestions here.

Thanks

remove the power button wires and short across them with a screwdriver if it starts up everytime then it aint the mb if it does it as before then i would say issue with board be careful when shorting the pins that you are using the correct 2 pins

good luck :)

thanks, shorting out the pins with a screwdriver yeilded the same results.. Well I guess I'm down to either a bad mobo, or however unlikely as it is, it could still be a bad PSU.. I say unlikely since it was working absolutely fine before this new mobo went in.. But ya never know, maybe something was disturbed in all the comotion.

oh and that 90% fine has now turned into 0% fine. I can't even start my damn new ivy bridge machine anymore. If i kill the power i get perhaps a split second of juice before nothing. Just to make sure i wasn't drawing too much, i even removed a GPU (which i sorta had too anyways to get a good clear run to the mobo pwr switch pins) so i know its not a too much draw from a paltry 500w psu problem. Besides the draw on IB is less than my old Q6600.

This mobo was an RMA of the same model.. But i couldn't wait, so i went out and bought another exact Asus mobo, and when this mobo came back i built a new machine for my spare.. So its really not the end of the world. Just annoyed at Asus for giving me two out of three P8Z77 mobos as duds.

I've had a similar error before when a PSU started to fail, became steadily worse until it went. (started dropping when the computer was on).

Got another PSU to test with? or one you can borrow ?

(assuming you've done 1 stick mem tests etc)

i woud get another PSU to test it before concluding it is the board see a friend or someone to borrow one if you have not got a spare also build it outside the case see if you get the same problem

Early days still, but i grabbed a new psu.. a temp GS600 for now.. But it seems to have not had any issues so far since installing the new psu.. I've probably only started a handful of times mind.. But it is looking positive. I'll probably return the GS600 and go grab an AX650, if it turns out to be the case that its just my aging ZM500 HP PSU that's giving up on me.
