Bad RAM?

Slowly getting this machine to how I want it now ;)

But I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software issue, but I think that it is hardware.

  • When running company of heroes I get a BSOD and an Infinite Loop error just after loading
  • When running Half-Life 2 I get a "hl2.exe - application error, memory could not be 'read' {memory address} " during loading

But I can play Call of Duty 2 fine on full graphics..?

I did solve the infinite loop error, but it seems to only last for one boot and on reboot the error starts appearing again. The hl2 error however seems to be unsolveable..! Worth bearing in mind that CoH used to run fine for the first couple days, too

I'm gonna go and borrow some RAM from someone and I'm also gonna run memtest86 [edit: Passed Memtest] in a second - I'll let you know the results of those.

Also worth noting that the RAM is rated for 2.0v, and the mobo was running it at 1.8v - but upping it to 2.0v makes no difference unfortunately.

Does anyone have other suggestions?

Edit, I have tried:
  • reinstalling windows
  • reinstalling drivers
  • reinstalling games

Try running memtest 86+ on the memory,at least that will tell you one way or another if its the memory at fault ;)

I'm sure the HL2 one is a common problem, might be worth checking the steam forums mate

Hrm, the RAM passed all 8 tests in memtest... What else could be the problem? I'm gonna try out these new 7.1 drivers... How do I tell which ones I've got already? I only installed these the other day from the ATI site...

Had that HL2.exe error with a 7600GS PCI-E card. Turned out the memory on the card had some issues. Swapped the Card out for another and it seemed to work. Might help...

I'll try that S&M.

How can I tell if my graphics memory is bad without having to swap it for another card? I don't have another PCI-E card available!
