Ok,
So I tend not to change platforms and build a new gaming rig every year, instead I tend to buy the best I can at 3-4 year intervals and stick with it.

So, now that time frame is once again upon me, with my current Rig:

2600K @ 4.4GHz
Z68 Asrock Extreme 4
16 GB DDR3 - RipJawF3-17000CL

But doing some reading on the web, there is the near time prospect of another socket change LGA 1151 - which will be Skylake compatible

http://wccftech.com/intel-skylake-p...port-compatible-lga-1151-socket-z170-chipset/

Now this looks like it is the replacement to Z97 tech Socket 1150 (unless I have missed something) so would it be prudent to hold off my plans for any new build until the fog of upgrade paths has been lifted?

I really wouldn't bother upgrading from a 2600K to anything anytime soon. I am very skeptical of the claims of skylake being as good as it will be and the difference between a clock for clock haswell and sandy is 10% at most, really not worth it. It won't be for a while anyway thats for sure.

Id sit tight and wait to see what skylake is like. Tbh based on personal experience, ivybridge and the current haswells arent really a big upgrade over sb. I expect broadwell to be a very slight improvement over hw, though rumours are that it will be a soldered chip therefore much cooler than hw.

I think we were lucky with the performance improvement with Sandy TBH.

This gent is going to upgrade, and seems just toasking if he should wait.

Are you upgrading the gfx cards as well? if you are doing multi card i would be looking at the best cpu i could get, and if that meant waiting to get it, that would be the wise option (ad long as it isn't a year away).

I wasn't planning on upgrading the GPU too....my R9 290 Tri-X OC runs what I play just fine....it is more a thing of keeping current...my Z68 board driver set isn't the most up to date (I think Asrock don't bother releasing anything after 1 or 2 years) so I get the odd issue (sound mostly) with games like BF4 and WOT, but nothing major.

It looks like my current rig has life in it still....I recently added the extra 8 Gb (to total 16GB) and I have always had SSD's so it has never been a slouch :)

Save my money for a new IPS 27" 144Hz monitor and gaming chair then ;):D

I would aim to clock that cpu a little higher since you have tri-fire.

A decent Monitor. The single best investment you can make imho. Pick a good one.

Btw, i don't think your cpu well last another 4 years.

Ive just gone from a 2600k, Asrock Extreme 4 gen 3, 16gb 1600mhz to Gigabyte Z97 gaming GT (wanted dual 16x for my 980s), 4790k and 16gb 2400mhz.

Thankfully I was given a fair bit for my old stuff so the upgrade was minimal for me in cost. There is a definite improvement and my 2600k was running at 4.8ghz.

I seem to have lucked in with my 4790k as it hits 5ghz easily but im sticking with stock as that still faster than my 2600k.

All of this just to play OpenTTD :P ha!

If I hadnt been offered a good lot for my old setup I wouldnt have bothered as the upgrade is minimal. Things like SSD's, decent monitor, audio card (if youre into that), would probably be higher on your list if you dont already have decent ones.

I agree with the new monitor, or maybe UHD IPS 60hz monitor Asus are bring out, but please look into a Steelcase Leap they are awesome love mine. £120 refurbished and even though it is 15 years old looks like new.
