Bad time to upgrade?

I know you can wait a lifetime for the right time to buy, always waiting 'another 6 months', but is there a good reason to hold off upgrading now?

I've saved a few quid during lockdown, I want to treat myself and upgrade my venerable 6700k, and have an eye on a 3950X and maybe a GB Aorus Master mobo.

With my luck I'll buy that and AMD will announce a 4nm, 64core chip for£28.50 2 weeks later. :P

I just upgraded to a 3900x. To be honest, there's never a right time to upgrade. There always something newer and better just around the corner. Just buy what you want when you want it :)

Now is a great time for CPU upgrades. The fight between AMD and Intel is back on. AMD are rumoured to be releasing XT versions of some of their CPUs in a fortnight, but not the 3950.

Not quite, but AMD have dropped the price of the Threadripper 3990 by $500 in the US.

It's Always a bad time.

Upcoming are:
-AMD XT refresh for current Ryzen Cpus. Looking at an estimated 10% gain over X variations with 0.2ghz increase in base and overclocked speeds.
-B550 mobos and new X570 boards like the MSI Tomahawk both supporting Pcie4.
- Big navi and 3000 series Gpus expected in September.
- AMD 4000 series Cpus in the Summer / Fall.

Long story short there's a massive leap in capability coming. But it really depends what you want.

The latest and greatest on specs sheet. Or a current gen system that will still be able to handle what 90% of consumers need.

I was in the same position at the very start of UK Lockdown..... Parts all arrived literally the first dawn of Lockdown lol... No regrets... Knew I would be at home for next few months bored.

Glad I paid extra for gpu too as the other company are still waiting for stock to arrive nearly 2 months later...

Never a perfect time to upgrade.. So if you have the money and are happy with what you are buying then why not :)

Best time to upgrade is always when a new release happens. Either get the latest and greatest, or get last generation for cheaper.

Upgrading "a few" months before a new release when you know it is imminent leaves a bad taste.

Thanks all.

The reason I asked was because as I was browsing around, looking at what's out I ran across a thread where someone said this is a particularly bad time to upgrade, and he got several posts in agreement.
I've looked for the thread, but god knows where it is - I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some stupidly obvious reason I wasn't aware of.

(There'll be a bit of gaming, but a lot of CAD work and rendering)

:)

There will be a lot of different opinions on the subject. Ultimately, it's up to you whether you upgrade now or in the future.

Some people aren't very good at budgeting annually and look at what they have for that month, if they don't get something then, they may not be able to later on.

It's true that there is never a good time to buy and you could put it off forever. Yes, with AMD there is new hardware about to be released (new Motherboards for example).

To put it into perspective, there have always been PCs designed for specific tasks like CAD. If you go on eBay, these are sold with older hardware. It doesn't mean it's not capable of doing the job.

It is true also that when new hardware is released, you can get a bargain on last generation.

This all comes down to how long you are prepared to wait and how quickly you need it, is it for work? If it is, can you really wait?
