I own the Baldur's Gate compilation on DVD.

1. What mods and updates should I use to get them running nicely on Win 7, hi-res etc.?

2. Do you recommend playing BG1 before BG2?

3. Are they all they're cracked up to be?

The install can get a little bit messy if you don't follow the guide completely, but you should be fine.

It is not usually recommended for first-time players to install anything but the minimum of the options, which just changes the UI/engine etc,as it can unbalance the game by adding items/characters, so I woudl recommend not installign any quests/characters etc for a first playthrough.

2. Yes....though I won't lie, BG2 is the main draw

3. Yes, they are excellent, the only thing I might say is that they are not really friendly to newcomers.

Alternatively, you could wait for the HD remake due out (hopefully) later this year, with new quests, characters, etc.

The first one is definitely worth playing, but you have to keep in mind that it's very unforgiving - it's completely open and there's nothing stopping you wandering into an area that will get you killed very easily in the early stages of the game.

Early on, ranged weapons are essential, and mages are rubbish (but awesome later on in the game). Mod it up so that you have the BG2 class system available and the higher resolutions, and just have a bit of patience with it.
