hi

i have a old acer aspire pc which is behaving oddly.

the pc freezes on start up when it gets to the windows booting screen. one issue was the psu bust so i replaced that a mth or so ago, but the freezing is when i installed windows 8.1. it was on vista and slow.

anyway, i thought it might be the HDD so i took it out and placed on my caddy and ran hd tune and no errors of bad sectors were found. i installed win 7 and it was ok. upgraded to windows 8 then 8.1 download from the store. fine. switched it off, went back the next morning and froze again. reset the machine and boots into windows. does this everytime. you have to restart the machine to make it boot.

i have now installed a different hdd, velociraptor to test if it is the hdd which was my initial thought and win 7 on it. not tried to boot this morning yet.

oh, the mobo keeps resetting and going back to 2008 - i have replaced the cmos battery. i have a feeling the mobo might be on its way out which is causing the crashing. its a AMD phenom x 3 system.

is there anything else i should think of?

Mobo and RAM (as the latter can affect just about anything and make it seem like the problem lies elsewhere). See how it does with the Velociraptor HDD, though.

Diagnosed/recovered data from an Acer Aspire last week, in that case CrystalDiskInfo showed bad sectors on the drive. Intel Rapid Storage Technology also warned the drive was faulty.

i'll try it later, should ahve this morning. if it boots first time, it's the HDD that will need replacing. the ram is the original stuff, not been changed, removed, shifted except adding a dimm which has been removed.

booted up and it's freezing with the new drive in. its either a windows 8/acer aspire issue or the mobo is on its way out. keeps resetting the bios.

this is an odd one .... have u checked to see if any of the capacitor heads on the motherboard have popped up ? compare it with others ,,,

if it was me i would get a new board and test everything on, that see what happens

i think the bios is updated to latest one, will varify.

i'll also check the capacitors next too.

capacitors are all fine. booted up ok today so i will power down and see again. the bios shows the right date and time so will monitor over tonight and tomorrow.

update: had the power switched off to it whilst playing the ps4, put the power leqad back in and switched it on with the original hdd back in and it frooze again. the bios also reset. frooze on the velociraptor as well. i think it's the motherboard. i wouldn't have thought it was the new evga 430 wt psu.

If it works okay with Windows 7 then how can it be the motherboard ?

Have you made sure you have got the latest Windows 8 drivers for all your hardware. NOT the ones from Windows update but the ones from your hardware website or the ones that came with it. Could be that.

it freezes on win 7 too. the drivers are the same for 7 and 8, no acer ones for win 8.
i will get the drivers from acer website as must admit i didn't do that as you usually don't need to. will get the mobo drivers and chipset ones and see. re-boots fine after windows install and updates, only from a cold start does it freeze.
