I'm off on holiday for a couple of weeks soon and I'm thinking about security for my expensive kit as I'm going to be staying in shared/open rooms.

I know there are several wire mesh options for big bags (80l backpacks) but have only come across one by Pacsafe that is small enough for my needs.

Are there any other options as it looks quite difficult to get hold of in the UK.

I'm going to be storing my equipment in my standard daysack and want to put this mesh on the inside of my bag (less obvious) and then secure it to something solid when I'm away from anywhere.

I bought a Pacsafe in the UK seven years ago and was easy to get hold of. Camping/travel stores have them.

They are perfect for stopping an opportunist.

There are plenty of places that sell big ones, only two places online* that sell small ones unfortunately, which is why I'm wondering if anyone has bought a small one from somewhere** or if they know of an alternative. :)

*Both random shops with almost identical designs and wording - dodgy..?
** I've looked in Cotswold, EB and S&R and they don't appear to do them.

Depending on where you stay, many hostels have lockers for you to store personal belongings in. Some kind of metal spiders web is a bit over the top tbh. And if someone opens your bag to find some high-security defense system, will they not just take the whole bag and run?

You lock it to the bed, and put the web on the outside, 99% of it's use is as a deterrent, let them know about it! You might get a feel of the kinda rooms you'll be staying in though and adjust your setup accordingly :) Don't stay in in **** holes basically.

Used pacsafe on my first trip to thailand, got ridiculed in a friendly manner by other travellers for being so overprotective.

Didn't bother on my next visit and didn't have a thing go missing but could have just been lucky.

However it is very easy to put on and remove and fold into the tiny storage bag.

You have to remember that by using it you are telling potential thieves that there is something of value in your bag.

Prob a dumb question but is it absolutely necessary that you take this very expensive kit w/you on a holiday?

What expensive kit? I thought camera... but then you said you'd be leaving it if you went anywhere.

It is DSLR camera equipment, kinda useful when I want to take nice pictures. It will be with me most times however I can't take it everywhere and so would rather leave it attached to something if I can't access a safe/locked room.

doesn't having something like that advertise that you have something worth stealing?

Which is why I plan on putting it inside my bag, infact the plan is to put it round the dry sack holding the camera equipment, inside my daypack, then attached to a bed/pipe. It's not going to stop the most determined thief but then most thefts (bearing in mind I don't assume people I'm going with are thief's) are more opportunist.

Travel insurance, enjoy your holiday! My DSLR is insured on hols by my household insurance.

I have that, but for the sake of a small bit of metal I can't see the issue.:p

If I had a DSLR, I'd take it with me everywhere, unless there were lockers at the hostel/hotel. Lockers being a common thing, in most hostels I've used. Have you checked with the place you're staying, to see if they have such secure storage?

I'm going white water rafting and canyoning, swimming and snorkelling... And living in small huts without doors for some of it. I don't expect anyone to steal anything but would rather use something as a deterrent just in case.

I'm guessing no one knows where to get one though unfortunately.

Because something designed for 80L is rather large for a 10L bag I want to cover! Which is why I'm looking at something in the 20L max size.

Thanks, didn't realise there was a UK site...! Although typically the only thing they don't stock is the one I'm looking for! Although that 12l bag may be just what I'm looking for. :)

Are there any other companies that do this sort of thing?
