I've never purchased a domain so bare with me as I'm a bit of a n00b in this area. Basically I've found a domain I want, currently it is just a holding page and checking back it seems it has always been just a holding page - according to whois it is due to expire tomorrow and I'd quite like to grab it - I actually do have a use for it unlike (it seems) the current owners. It is a .com domain

What is the best way of getting it? I guess I'm making a few assumptions here - if whois says its expiring tomorrow does that mean the new owner hasn't renewed it or might he have already renewed with the registrar? Also if it expires tomorrow at what point can I grab it?

cheers for the reply, does that 80 days reply to all registrars?

Also what is the best way of grabbing it if he doesn't renew - do I just wait 80 days from now and try registering it or should I try one of the services out there for grabbing expired domains?

I don't think it's as clear cut as "80 days".

It can depend on the domain registry company. It does take a while, maybe up to 90 days for a expired domain to be made available again. Domains are placed into what they call redemption. A domain can be renewed during this process, but for a hefty fee. After that, the domain is submitted for deletion.

Best to check with the company who the domain is registered with, on their site. Don't mention to anyone you after that domain, as they would obviously put a premium on it! Check out godaddy, few years ago they offered some service that would grab the domain when it becomes available.
