Not sure where this belongs really. It's not really Home and Garden related but then it is woodworking related which is the main content of the post. I guess GD would be equally valid.

Given i can't get out on my Paddle Board in this lovely weather, i was looking at ways to work on balance/core strength and give myself something to do and spotted a video on making a homemade balance board.

These things are about £150 to buy which seems ridiculous for some plywood and a bit of round wood!

Found a place locally selling 28mm Birch Ply for £10 a sheet of 1.2mx1.0m which is insanely cheap, it'll finish much nicer than regular ply.

Wasn't 100% sure on the shape. Some are symetrical and others, like the one in the video are more surfboard shaped. I went for that but i'm starting to question whether to change!

Wasn't sure the best way to draw the curves, but ended up with a pencil on some string. Cut one side then used the offcut as a template. It'll be slightly out by the kerf but it looks close enough. I'll be rounding the edges off once finished.

At this point you could probably say it's finished! So decided to try some inlay work. I'd made a mistake on ordering some hardwood for a chopping board and what i'd thought was 2" square was actually 20mm square. So ripped down some Iroko into 4mm strips. This was stupid on my table saw and i imagine a lot of you would've been shouting at me had you been watching!

Played around with a rough design

Then set about routing it out. Really i should've stopped at this point as it was nearly 10pm, and i was in the shed and getting tired.

Ended up routing down the full centre line, rather than stopping as planned. Also i didn't have a 20mm router bit so made 2 passes with a 16mm bit. In one point i went a bit wide and so have ended up with a gap around 22mm and not sure how it'll look.

Tonight i might rip down some other wood for this centre line. Make this the bottom and then rip the Iroko to 16mm and just use one pass to ensure a better fit.

And this is where i finished.

If i stick with this as my top, i might just go with 3 full length strips.

Clearly not much interest here :p

Either way, for completeness this is now finished. Using a foam roller at the moment, but will (hopefully) have a matching plywood based roller as per my other thread if i manage to make it look reasonable.

It's hilarious how bad my balance/coordination is!
