I was wondering if anyone can set me right. I have tried to read into it, but are struggling to find something that answers my questions.

I am looking to purchase the following as part of a new system:

  • Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58
  • Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz
  • Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel

As the processor 'only' has a FSB of 1066MHz; is it not over speccing by getting memory of 1600MHz and a motherboard to match?? Or am I completely missing the point?

Is there a way to balance the system e.g. overclocking the processor FSB to match the rest of the system? or am I just talking nonsense?

Also, what is the FSB speed of the motherboard, in terms of working with the processor/ memory?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Neil

the ram will run at the speed of the cpu fsb/baseclock or whatever its called these days, in this case 1066mhz (which is actually a multiplication of the fsb/baseclock), the motherboard will also run at this STOCK frequency, unless you overclock.

the ram being able to run at 1600mhz allows headroom for overclocking.

Thank you both for the advice. So long as you overclock correctly, the system will balance out and give you so extra raw power. nice.

Great Article! He must have spent some time putting that together.
