Baldurs Gate 1 or 2?

After hearing a lot of good things about these games I've decided to give them a go.

Which would you recommend I start with?

Do you need to play 1 to get the most out of 2?

I understand that you can mod 1 to use the same engine and graphics as 2 so I'm guessing the only difference between the two games is going to be the storyline. Is that right?
 
I would have thought the answer was obvious. :p


And yes you can mod the first one to have the graphical capabilities of the second. Haven't got any links to hand though, sorry.
 
I am just starting both of them together. The first can seem a little too outdated now, so bare that in mind if you are not going to mod it. Don't be put off by how aged it looks

It's been a while since I've been through them, you could probably pick up BG2 without missing BG as a lot of the story is explained to you, they are long games though and very good. I think the mod that lets you run bg in the bg2 engine is bgtutu, can't be sure though.
 
Play 1 first, it really is worth it and sets up the second nicely. If you are starting as a Mage take a companion or two that are tanks and make sure they are the distraction for the AI. As Washout says at high levels a Mage really is unstoppable. Once you have Alacrity and Time Stop it's game over for the AI, getting there unscathed is the challenge.
