Baldur's Gate 3

I’m playing as a paladin with Shadowheart, Asterion and Gale. I’m thinking of ditching Gale for Karlach.

You might be missing some meat.
So maybe gale for karlach is a good try. I found lae'zel was useful in combat as a big hitter. But your party does seem fairly balanced. You might lose a bit of magic without gale but it should be doable.

I'm not super familiar with paladin I have to say. I've played in 4 lung campaigns (in D&D) and no one has played a paladin.

Shadowheart I find very strong. Clerics are. Especially in early levels. I use spiritual weapon a lot. But you might want to respec her. Trickster clerics aren't great.

Make sure you're using sneak attack with astarion and bless from shadowheart if you aren't.

You should be able to talk your way out of a lot of fights with a paladin?

I personally really like control spells, spells like crown of madness (I know it's not rated well by the community) and hypnotic pattern and hold person.
If fights are hard, taking out an enemy via a control spell is incredible use for concentration spells.

Maybe you're doing all these. But many players focus on big damage spells rather than control.

Got to be honest I’m just muddling through, playing for fun.

As said before there are so many intricacies that the vast majority of it goes over my head.

Gale is practically useless most of the time (but then I have never tried any of theses control spells of which you speak, every fight seems to be attack, attack, attack or die, mostly die).

I have never played a squad based game or a turn based one either but the reviews were so strong I gave it a go.

Don’t get me wrong I am enjoying it but not enjoying the combat which seems to be the only way to progress.

It is a good game and have used most of the characters. There is a lot of lock picking and traps so asteron for that and stealth archer. Karlach is good heavy hitter so is lazreael. Minthara is useful when there are enemy magic casters . Equipeed everyone with bow/crossbow for long range then melee, so by the time they got close half HP is gone. Shadhowheart seems to have poor accuracy, she was generally ok, with bit of attack and heal (so does minthara) Wyll seemed to have lousy attack damage, not much attack magic so couldn't see how he was useful.

I mostly used fireball magic (then ice/thunder) unless fire creatures there is so much other spells it's just overwhelming and pointless, fully learned gale has 50+ spells. I didn't find out about gale learning spells from scrolls until near the end anyway.

Gale is great, Telekenisis to warp boss mobs out to your party, then get the tanks to stick the boot in. Plus the odd Disintegrate when high enough :)

I've only done 2 play throughs, Gale left early the first time and I failed to get him out the hole the second time.

Usually have Astarion, Shadowheart and either Karlach or Laezael. Played as a monk and that is an op class if you want control, especially vs bosses. Misty step helps with moving around

I never used Gale, found him annoying but I'd have to take him on any future runs and the others I've all used enough. Will can stay on the bench lol.

His high level spells are good, problem is only use a few times then need to sleep, so pain in the backside...then lose magic items everytime sleep.

I found him funny, can’t stand Astarion though.

For me, solid crew is Shadowheart, Gale, Karlach and your own character as a high-dex mixed range/finesse rogue or warlock.

My favourite classes are bard, sorcerer, cleric.

Note, in BG3 in only up to level 2 spells.

So I don't take gale. He overlaps too much with bard/sorcerer and I just don't really like wizards.
Not keen on wyll either.

Bard is for control and role play. And my favourite class in d&d

Shadowheart is insanely good. Bless, guidance, spiritual weapon, healing word.

3rd slot is the melee attacker. I never play this class in D&D thankfully they are simply compared to full casters.
Really didn't like lae'zel so really glad I have found karlach now. Literally last night though.
Think I'm going to take wildheart + tiger for her.

4th slot is astarion simply due to his efficiency getting loot.

Use gale (or his role) to Control.
Concentration on something like hold person can effectively remove one enemy.. And you can still cast other non concentration spells.

Placing AOE spells like cloud of daggers in doors, very effective. And much more impactful vs direct damage. Melee/physical characters can do the HP damage. Casters are amazing for control.

Its OK in BG3.. As you play all classes. But I can't stand. High dex characters when I play D&D. It's high charisma all the way for me.

In BG3 I end up not fighting a lot with my main character as a bard. Loads of dialogue options.

Like going into the goblins with disguise self as a drow. You get basically worshiped and discounts at shops.

I'm not really a fighter in D&D though.
We are 50 - 60 sessions into my in person campaign and my bard character has killed 1 NPC.. By accident. And she's my all time favourite character by a mile.
