Just ordered this oldie. Really fancy a good fantasy well told rpg right now.

Does it stack up in these days of modern gaming, or did I waste my money?

I think it's still unbeaten. The isometric graphics are charming and the environments sufficiently awe-inspiring, and in fact 3D games are only just beginning to catch up to them in terms of both character and grandeur. The 2D portraits are much more characterful than the 3D avatar faces of modern RPGs. The gameplay is actually unequalled, since it's the trend in most modern RPGs for your character to be wandering around solo, or with a couple of companions whom you didn't really have direct control of all the time (as with KOTOR, where you could pause to queue up a couple of orders for your companions but when you unpaused it you could only control ONE character in realtime), whereas switching off party AI and using autopause in BG2 you could have full control of all 6 characters and play it like a turn-based strategy game:)
The writing for the NPCs is also fantastic, Minsc is still my favourite game character of all time. You could argue that Planescape: Torment beats it in this regard, but even though there's more dialogue with your party members in Torment the level of interaction in BG2 is much closer - little touches like the fact that they're liable to interrupt the game to start a conversation with you while you're walking around, it made them more complete indivduals, helped you see them as more than just followers. KOTOR2 tried to make your party members come to life, but the fact that you only really talk to them aboard ship and the rest of the time they stare blankly into space ruins this for me.
Anyway, enjoy and try to get Torment from the 'bay after you finish it! :

best Rpg ever, lost count of how many times iv played through
Monk f.t.w - difficult in the lower levels, but becomes unstoppable later on

buy throne of bhaal as well. when you play through bg2 you can get the expansion equipment, as well as a completly new massove dungeon

Possibly one of the best games of all time and it has held up pretty well in terms of graphics. Replayed them again last year and loved every second of it, well apart from the seconds where I was getting handed my rear end.

Still the best pure RPG ever.

Absolutely *huge* game - with the expansion you can easily clock up 200hours of gametime. Fanastic characters, storyline, and the 2D graphics still look decent today.

Its not an easy game though, especially if you play on core rules. Save often!

It wees all over modern RPG's. :)

I you can get past the graphics, and perhaps play the original first to keep up with the overall plot, then you might realise that it's one of the all time RPG greats. And Minsc is a fantastic NPC. :)

It's my second favourite game of all time.

I'm actually playing it at the moment, I've rolled the classic Kensai/Mage, just about to unlock the Kensai again.

Get the widescreen mod, great to play it at modern resolutions.

Yeah it was a great game although, I never liked the magic system. Every fight I would prepare my mages with all the counter spells, and dispels I could and yet still, I'd end up waiting ten minutes for all the evil mages dispels and shields to dissapear.
