It's meant to be epic and I feel like I've missed out but is it still enjoyable with the out of date graphics or shall I move on to the The Elder Scroll games?

And if I start at The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion will I be missing lots of plot and epicness from the earlier games?

Thanks :)

Morrowind (TES3) was great and you can mod it to improve the graphics substantially but that does take a while. Oblivion, similarly mod-able, is superb. You don't need to play the preceding games to really enjoy it and with Skyrim on the horizon now would be a good time to get into the series.

I too am curious about Baldur's Gate. Is it a party-based rpg? That would really put me off. I prefer to go it alone.

With the resolution mod BG2 (and BG) looks nice. The plot, sub plot & party members are the important thing though, there are some amazing quests in BG2 the like of which I doubt we'll see again.

Baldurs Gate 1&2 are pretty much the best rpg ever made. Oblivion is the prettiest lol

You don't have to make a party in BG but it's damn hard to solo if you haven't played before. You miss out huge parts of the game too, as there are loads of party side quests. Their interaction is brilliant too, there is hilarious banter.

It is party based, but soloing it is a huge challenge and very wonderful to accomplish :)

Also the party interactions in BG2 make playing with the NPCs fell far more wonderful than playing alone does. The tactical pause and play combat and issuing turn based commands is has a brilliant and better than chess feel to it.

I have some videos of a solo playthrough of the first game using BGT to remove the level cap. The first one is boring because I only had thief levels and a bow.

Baldurs Gate is quite ridiculously good, I'd recommend delving into using TuTu which lets you play it in the sequels engine and also add banter packs for a lot of fun. In terms of graphics it's not quite up there with Oblivion but it still looks amazing, hand drawn graphics never get old. What is going to be a problem nowadays is it's built on 2nd edition D&D which is going to seem impenetrable and ridiculously unfair if you aren't used to it, and still a pain in the ass if you are. Stick with it though because if you like things like Dragon Age you haven't seen anything close to as good as Baldurs Gate (unless you played Torment or the original Fallouts)

BG/2. After immersing yourself in the story, you'll forget about the poor graphics and just appreciate how fun and exciting it actually is.

If you want BG style gameplay and nice graphics then there's always Neverwinter Nights 2, although I have to admit it's not quite on the level of the original Baldur's Gate.

Subtley different games, non?

Baldurs Gate (series) is - in my eyes - a "proper" RPG, the true definiation of the term. Morrowind is more an Action FPS/RPG hybrid with lighter RPG elements.

Both excellent games, but if you forced me to pick one, I'd say BG with no hestiation.

Its the depth and variety of the characters and their interactions that works for me, especially as you can enjoy different combinations on multiple playthroughs - the fact there is 6 per party means that you can 'carry' a weaker player just because you enjoy their personality, unlike games like DA, where 4 members means you end up picking the best class balance or strength just to beat the challening parts.

And BG games have multiplayer!

Cheers will start BG.
Can anyone advise what mod/graphics/expansion I need to install to get the full experience but without unnecessary side quests?
So far I'm planning:
Baldur's Gate +Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast then Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (no expansions) but with "gibberlings3.net Widescreen Mod"

Do the expansions have major plot/story lines?
Cheers

Try Neils link earlier. I have just installed it and it is working fine. Seems like a small effort for what you get out of it

thanks (and neil) but seems intimidating and unnecessary for me.
I only want to run through it quickly to get the main story line.
