Finally got round to playing it about over a decade of it being released, and I've gotta say I'm finding it very difficult indeed. I've just started Chapter 2 but even when trying to do Chapter 1 quests your party members die very easily.

Is it just me being rubbish or did anyone else find this?

Early Baldur's Gate is brutal. No way around it.

Not a lot you can do other than use ranged weapons for a level or two. Go around the countryside killing easy things for xp, but even that can be tough going.

Low-level casters are very fragile. They'll get killed by a dire wolf in one bite.

High-level casters will nuke a whole city block in one spell.

Welcome to D&D 2nd ed casters :D

You should have some form of ranged weapon for all your casters, so they can still be of some use when out of spells.

Explore with your Imoen (stealthed). Make sure your toughest guys (fighters) are in front, with fragile characters bringing up the rear.

Save often.

It is quite difficult. The balance of healing is a bit odd in all D&D rulesets though I've found, never enough healing at lowest levels - spells that heal 1 or 2 hitpoints - woohoo. Then too many at higher levels when your characters are much better and a lot of the time don't really need them because you have better armour and are able to take down enemies much quicker.

Definately stick with it. I'm envious if you haven't played BG2 and ToB as well. Playing them all through for the first time was amazing.

Yeah, I bought the complete Baldur's Gate a while ago and I've only really had a few hours on the first game. Can't say it 'really' grabbed me enough to warrant me spending more time on it, though I haven't attempted to get a hold of any texture downloads yet. I will give the second one a try though and yes, I thought it wasn't easy. :D

I've got TuTu and the widescreen mod so it looks good enough. Think I'm exploring a little too much aswell, I tried doing the ulcaster dungeon and fighting the baslisks while still doing Chapter one. Think I'll stick to following the storyline a little more closely. As far as that goes I'm on my way to Nashkel Mines, currently in the Nashkel fair.

Trick is to go and pick up Jaheira and Khalid right at the start. Up until then, its seriously tricky.

Its great though, taking a char right from lvl1 in BG1 through to lvl20+ in BG2:ToB :)

TuTu is definately worth getting too - lets you use BG2 classes in BG1 also, but be warned! Classes like the Monk weren't designed to be used at those low levels, and the Monk *sucks* until level5...! :D

thats is one of the best games ever made :)
a good spell to use early on is summon monster, just make sure to rest as often as you can and things will start to get easier

Hahaha yes. Much fun was had when I found a wand of monster summoning. 20 angry dogs isn't much of a threat to high level baddies, but it still distracts them enough to fling a few arrows and get in a few magic missiles.

To the OP: stick with it, and don't play them out of order. You'll enjoy them best if played in sequence. BG1 is truly an awesome game, and if you get into it, you'll have nothing but love for the 2nd too. ToB (#3) is hit and miss, but still worth playing, as it wraps the story up.

It really isnt that hard, this was made before games were just pushovers like now. Just don't send 6hp characters into melee with ogres and you'll be fine. A good starting character may be an elven ranger as ranged weapons are very powerful at early levels and its easy to get a decent roll with one.

As said before the balance is like this, low levels, melee and ranged fighters/rangers/paladins are the strongest characters, mid level clerics can be powerful. but mages although useful in BG1 really come into their own in BG2 becoming the most powerful by a long way.

Good luck and keep plugging at it, its my favourite game of all time and I am constantly playing it now even though i've been playing baldurs gate 1 & 2 for like 10 years. There is just something about it that is so special, there really hasnt ever been a better rpg in my opinion. (fallout 1 & 2 / Planescape are close)

Once you've played through once i'd recommend you start looking at mods like baldurs gate trilogy, and most importantly the big world project. The modding community is still going strong now!

BG2 is the best PC game i've ever played, with BG1 not far behind. It's a really rewarding feelings when you sucessfully devise a cunning plan to get past the difficult bits:D

Loved BG1 when it first came out, unfortunately my step-dad took the game disks with him when he departed about 8 years ago :(
I did buy one of the Baldur's Gate things from HMV several years ago, I think it was supposed to be like all the discs on one? Shame it didn't work, couldn't even get into the second keep right at the start!

Did love this game though, might have to see if I can find it somewhere along with BG2 :D

Lol thanks for the encouragement guys, feels like I'm gonig to run a marathon instead of just play a PC game:D It is difficult though, I'm playing through NWN 1 atm aswell and I'm positively flying through that.

My character is a Half Elf Ranger, I've got Khalid and the druid woman he comes with, the lass who you get at the beginning, and evil necomancer and a evil theif(who keeps getting 1 shotted.) Think i'll get rid of him and the necro asap as the others don't seem to like them.

I got all the games together in 1 box from amazon, was only about a tenner iirc.

Aye, this thread has also given me a bit of incentive to give it another go. This time I won't begin the adventure as a Mage. That was probably where I went wrong.

I might get that compilation pack off amazon as well, £12 for all 4? Epic :)

I probably would start a mage again because I love spellcasters, always have in any game like it. Who doesn't like the look of a ton of Magic Missiles impaling themselves into someones chest? :D

Takes me back to my D&D / AD&D days. Very similar where a Magic-User was low powered until around 6th to 8th level, that for me was when you were able to start using fireballs! Area damage effect! :D

Love BG. One of the few games I've played through a few times. Playing Dragon Age at the moment which kind of reminds of me BG.

For anyone who is on an old school RPG marathon and hasnt played for even heard of this.
I HIGHLY recommend picking up Planscape: Torment :D
