Hi Folks

Had to get a ball joint replaced on my car this week and the mechanic told me the wheels shouldn't need balancing but I'm not sure on this. Is this required when a ball joint is changed?

Thanks!

Wheels will only need to be balanced when the rotating mass of the wheel changes.

the ball joint is a component of the steering/suspension, separate from the wheel itself

I think he's confused on alignment not balancing.

And no you wouldn't really need an alignment from replacing a balljoint.

Which car and which balljoint anyway?

Hi guys thanks for the responses. It's a Fiat Punto MK2 and not sure what ball joint. I know it was the front left if that's what you mean? :D Yes I am getting mixed up with the balancing and alignment part it would seem.

If the whole lower arm was replaced instead of just the ball joint on it's own then it may require an alignment as that can nudge the toe angle slightly, but ball joint on it's own I wouldn't worry about unless the steering wheel has moved position slightly.

Presuming you are talking about the bottom ball joint anyway.
