Hi guys,
I notice that the 6400 and 8500 Ballistix 2Gb kits are both priced the same.
I am looking at getting some to replace my current G.Skill LA DDDR2-667 set (it's been a good clocker, but will not go over DDR2-800).

Any reason not to purchase the 8500 set in favour of the 6400 ?

Will be running this on a P5b deluxe...

:) anyone know how well the P5b deluxe board copes with these chips at the stock 1.8VDimm setting ? (I remember reading about all sorts of problems a few months ago about stock SPD/VDimm settings not being read properly)
Just want to make sure I can at least boot with them so I can then raise the speed/spd in the bios.

well 1028 is not a disaster :)

just was hoping for more...

I'm sure they would go higher with more volts, but I've heard 2.3V + is not really good for Micron D9 chips ?

Mark.

Yes but aren't they rated to work at DDR2-1066 CAS5 @ 2.2VDimm ?

I would send them back if they are not obtaining the correct rated speed.

Tried SPD settings and manual.

Should we definately go manual and if so - what would you suggest ?

I think I tried 5,5,5,18 and the TRC @ 20 - this all at 2.25V (no 2.2V on P5-B)

thanks, Mark.

Try this Mark :

(in the order it appears from top to bottom in bios screen, i'm assuming you are running a bios equal to or later than 0804)

5,5,5,15,5,35,3,11,5,13

static read control disabled

I have noticied that the P5b seems to have problems setting the very last 4 SPD settings (the 3,11,5,13 values) - It seems to leave them all at the default of 10 which can cause issues (for my current G.Skill chips anyway)

I used the windows memset tool to find out what the values should be when using auto SPD and then used manual SPD to fill them in.

thanks - will try that.

let me know how you get on with yours when they arrive.

Have to say even though not meeting rated (yet) - far better than my Corsair 6400s were - which managed 830.

So far they have run at the 1028 for 1 hour Orthos with no problems (running in the background)

Mark.

No probs. I'm just hoping for DDR2-920 CAS 4 so that I can bump my fsb up to 460 to get my [email protected]ally managed to get my E6300 up to 420fsb last night, and all at a VCore of 1.25V (1.2 under VDroop) - think I have myself a nice E6300 here, I just hope I dont come up against an fsb wall with it on my way to 460 !

well much better - but still not totally stable @ 1066 MHz.

without side fan - Orthos stable 1 min 45 seconds !

with side fan - stable 1 hour 5 mins

well not there yet - but definate improvement.

this is with SPD AUTO settings, your setting were appreciated - but it only managed 15 minutes with those ones.

cheers, Mark.

you cannot be sure that it;s the memory 'bumming' out.
it might be the northbridge (as you do explain it's getting real hot)
what FSB are you running ?
the P5b slackens timings after 401fsb (therefore the region 370-400 can be problematic due to tight timings in this area).

very true - 401fsb + on my P5-B D is a no-go though - sometimes won't even post 401+ fsb !

well currently testing RAM at 890 CAS4 - as I can't get anything 1020MHZ CAS5 stable for more than 1 hour :(

Mark.

will be getting my modules on wednesday, will let you know how I get on mate.

good luck with the RMA Mark.
It's nice knowing you only have to post it to Scotland, and that Crucials RMA turnaround is supposed to be quick and efficient.
I mean this in a good way - but i'm glad it turned out to be just a bad module, as I had fears that these PC2-8500 modules would turn out to be a bit 'tripe' !!
:)
