I am an inexperienced overclocker, and was hoping for some guidance on a couple of options I am considering for upgrading my memory from 2GB to 4GB. I thought it might help make my PC a little more capable of running current first person shooters on my 19” monitor – I can currently run COD4 very nicely on pretty much maximum graphics settings at 1440 x 900.
My current system set-up is:
A-Bit IP35 Pro
Intel core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, currently OC’d to 3.3GHz
2GB DDR2 – 8500 Crucial Ballistix Tracer (2 x 1GB)
GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Tuniq Tower 120
I am considering:
1) Getting another 2 strips of 1GB DDR2 – 8500 Ballistix; or
2) Getting 2 x 2GB of DDR2 – 8500 (not too fussed which brand)
I am aware that there can be some issues with Ballistix ram failing (although with good RMA service) so I wanted people’s thoughts on the two options, and what sort of tweaking I would need to do to get any new ram running properly.
Also, when I bought my system from OCUK a little over 18 months ago I am sure I saw it mentioned that if you opted for 4GB instead of 2GB, the CPU would only be overclocked to 3.1GHz for stability.
Any thoughts or opinions on the above would be greatly appreciated.
