Ballon d'Or shortlist announced

You're spot on, but going by how some of the awards have been dished out in the past (Henry vs. others) then trophies often count. The guy won a domestic treble and got to the WC final. It may well be enough even though we all know not even Ronaldo compares to Messi atm.

The only tiny reason I can see it going to someone other than Messi is the fact that he won it last year.

Indeed, he has lots of silly things conspiring against him, his country had Maradona as a manager so were never going to do well in the world cup, Barca got bored out of the CL by Inter and he did win it last year, obviously none of these should matter as he was probably better last season than any player I've ever seen. There was a 2 or 3 week spell earlier this year which caused me disbelief, he scored like 10 goals in one of those weeks (or something) and every time I watched him he did something which I didn't really think was possible. One of my most memorable periods of football watching, he was almost superhuman.

It takes some player to take pity on Ibrahimovic and hand him a penalty out of sympathy.

They by far weren't his best of last season, gotta ask, am I really reading bitterness into your post?
Well i dont really watch Barca apart from against Madrid and champions league hence why i chose the arsenal goals...and no i didnt mean it like that at all, we were beaten fair and square by you (Arsenal).
I think he took Sunday badly
I didnt/havent.

Sneijder.

Nearly allways stood out as the most effective player on the pitch in the games i saw him play in last season, moving the ball and striding forward with the pomp of a zidane in his prime.

Messi does amazing things, some of his goals blow me away...currently the most gifted player on the planet, but all round for everything last season, Sneijder on points:)

Break out year for thomas muller, im sure his time will come.

The top three have to be Messi, Sneijder and Xavi, though not necessarily in that order. Messi will probably win it for the insane amount of goals he scored last year but I personally think Sneijder ought to win it. He was Inter's star player last year when they won the CL, Serie A and Coppa Italia, plus he was joint top scorer during the WC for Holland and was their star player.

DM's nefarious all-blinding pet hate aside, hasn't Ozil been decent for Madrid? I make no claims to know about his form for Bremen previously.

God knows why a Sunderland second-choice striker made the list though.

Yet more rubbish posted about me, I've never once said Ozil isn't good, I've never once said he doesn't have a lot of potential, what I said was, he wasn't even close to as good as people said in the World Cup, he had one great game in the world Cup, Muller had 4-5 outstanding games and no poor games, and the biggest game he didn't play in Germany looked a completely different side. Ozil was the 5th/6th best player for Germany in the world cup, Muller, Klose, Swineyface(no idea how to spell it), Lahm, then Ozil.

Muller was THE best player at the world cup, bar none. Iniesta/Villa have a huge shot as they won the world cup and had very good, but not great seasons for their teams.

Messi, average world cup, for him, great in the league but frankly I think Ronaldo did better. Messi looked great in an established side, Ronaldo was outstanding in a side building from scratch with two complete turkeys(Kaka/Benzema) in the team, with a bunch of other clowns in the team. Real almost pipped Barca to it, Ronaldo was infinately more important to Real than Messi was to Barca to be honest, also put on a bit of a show in several games in the world cup.

Lucio(I still find it funny in a thread before he went to Inter i was the ONLY person to pick Lucio in a best team thread, and was laughed at for my choice) was by far the best CB in the world in the past year. Scored some important goals, is like 111 years old, though he turned into a bit of a diving git under Mourinho at Inter.

For me, Ronaldo, Drogba, Xavi 19 assists last season, or Messi. Drogba's record of assists + goals was insane last year.

INiesta last season got 1 goal, and 5 assists, even with a world cup winning goal, best player of the year, not even remotely close, factor in his diving which has made Ronaldo/Drogba seem like incredibly honest players and he's not even close, he had a very poor season by his standards, he had a poor season by most players standards.

I agree with most of DM's post () apart from that I thought Villa was the best playera at the WC, or possibly Forlan in that he carried a very average side way beyond where they should have been.

Half of that list are on purely for playing a couple of good games in the WC rather than it being based on a whole year thing, Klose being the prime example.

Gyan is obviously a spelling mistake with 'Lucio' though tbh.
