Ban Russia From Athletics

You'd have to ban China, the USA to stand a chance to remove drugs from sport.

Right, but I don't think there is evidence proving their national anti-doping agencies were complicit in covering up doping along with the IAAF?

This scandal is on a scale that hasn't been seen since the cold war years - the consequences should be quite dramatic.

This is the difference, it's not that athletes were cheating, it's that the federation was helping covering it up.

Turkey taking on more than a handful of shady East African athletes and fast tracking them to Turkish nationality.

Athletics Kenya doing absolutely NO out of competition testing on world class athletes. Prompting WADA to setup a specific test clinic in Kenya to clamp down on the situation.

USA/Nike/Armstrong....

Russia are at the forefront, state meddling is so apparent and this is not news, this has been speculation and pretty much full on assumed to the point it is a joke amongst athletes for many years. Xenon and Argon abuse was rampant in Russia, such research and ability to operate secretely in such grey areas doesn't just come out of nothing, it's laboratory born and filtered down to the best in exchange for MONEY, like everything.

Internally to Russia will be one thing, and expected cover up wise, but if IAAF have been turning a blind eye and accepted dirty money, it's likely to be impossible to recover from and there will need to be a massive change in the world of athletics going forward.

Its pretty common to fast track a foreigner to be a citizen if they have exceptional sporting talent. They will bring in loads of sponsorship money and any podium finishes help public moral.

well it should to be standard , if someone cought cheating the whole nation should to be banned for next main event. it will reduced cheating to zero in no time

Are you saying a single persons actions should result in a country being banned?

Systematic cheating covered up by a countires governing bodies and higher, yes, absolutely should result in a country ban. It's an extreme case, not a couple of individuals.

Despite all of this, there will be clean Russian athletes who now are faced with being banned from the pinnacle of their careers because of others. These people dedicate their lives to this so it's a real shame for them but WADA has to do this to the country completely if it is as bad as they say.

The real answer is tougher sentences on cheaters. 1 and 2 year bans are pathetic, they serve very little incentive to not cheat.... If you are caught cheating, banned for life. End of. You will never compete again, and any winings you took from races in the form of prizes should be paid back in full because that money in my opinion is fraud money. If they imposed super strict bans like this, it would massively cut down on doping as there would at least be dire consequences to your actions, not just missing a single season of competing and coming back.

Not saying they are innocent but I just feel all this has come out in response to Russian actions of late

I don't know whether you follow athletics or not but there have been serious question marks over lots of Russian athletes for years and many of their athletes have failed drugs tests in the time. This report is stating however that it's even worse than thought and is, in essence, state sponsored doping.

I don't think that there's much of an argument that it's down to Russia's actions in any sphere other than athletic.

It would probably also reduce the number of competitors to zero too - maybe Tuvalu has a chance of a medal now...

You're not going to be able to prevent rogue competitors taking drugs and it would be entirely unfair and disproportionate to ban the entire nation for the actions of one individual (on a side note you might end up with competing nations trying to slyly dope another countries athletes to get them banned). However where it appears to be systematic and effectively condoned by a nation then banning that nation becomes a realistic option, it is unfortunate that there are probably some clean athletes in that country but it would be almost impossible to remove the risks of occasionally penalising some athletes who are "unfortunate" enough to be from a country that is abusing the system.

I think xdcx is probably right that there's something about longer bans being necessary on an individual level, I don't know whether it has to be for life but there's certainly some evidence to show that the effects of drug taking can benefit the person taking them for years after they have ceased (also they'll probably suffer from higher risks of health complications too).

This is what should happen.

When i used to run at county level back in the 80's. To step up meant taking one of two paths. Drop work and take up full time training instead or take the other path with medicinal help.

There is no reason for any sports person to cheat. If they are banned then tough luck. Choose another job that doesnt need you to cheat to try and win.

Another problem if the IAAF is now run by people who are also suspect, sly, devious, backstabbing there way to the top. So dont expect anything to be done anytime soon about any problems they face

Your not telling me that the current leadership didnt know what was going on when they were deputy of the department.
