can anyone link me to some benchmark results comparing low end cards with similar amounts of memory, to the same cards with different amounts of memory?

i'm trying to convince one of my noob friends that memory is much less important than he seems to think.

he's the type that seems to think a 256mb card is automatically twice as good as a 128mb card. :/

automatically. ie, a 512mb fx5200 is better than a 256mb x800gto2 type of person.
Oh one of those people. Yeah, you need to show people like that some benchmarks.

Edit: Actually, just give them a flick around the ear-hole. :D

Just tell him you can't polish a turd and that is what low end cards for games are :p

It doesn't make it easy explaining to these people when games still put stuff like 64MB Video card required, 128MB recommended, that makes no difference if the card is a piece of tat.

It use to have some vague relevance when a generation jump meant an increased amount of memory but now we have a lot of jumps still with 256MB, heck you can get a 9800 Pro with 256MB of memory and try comparing that to an X1900 XT 256MB, not funny :D

You *need* a certain amount of memory to store textures and the like but after that it is the ability to actually "process" stuff that counts and an FX 5200 with 1024MB of memory still won't be able to handle even 256MB of that, more likely 128MB is the highest settings you'll ever get out of it. 512MB is only needed at higher resolutions and settings of which something like an X1600 Pro will never be able to reach (since it would be unplayable at those settings as it doesn't have the grunt).

No use giving someone a heavy baseball bat that can whack the ball 500 miles if the guy can't even pick it up :p
