I've recently started a website with a wordpress template and vidahost as the host. Now I've not uploaded much content onto the site (about 25mb through my ftp) but i have got a topic in the photography section here regarding my recent holiday. Now its had a few views (around 650) but noticed my bandwidth usage has shot up over the past few days with the uploading and link to my topic in here topping at over 1gb transfer yesterday alone . As a result I'm only 1.4gb off my monthly usage.

The question is what will happen when it goes over 5gb (monthly allowance) will the server just give up the ghost for the remainder of the month or will vidahost ask me if i want to up my bandwidth by however many gb extra? :(

I think they'll add the charge for the extra GB on to your bill, upto a limit at which point they'll disconnect you. They'll be in touch whenever you go over anyway.

Have you compressed the images as much as is feasible?

Contact them to find out your options, they're very responsive.

If you're on the basic package, the package is designed as a starter for small websites. Now whilst most small websites won't use 5GB of traffic in a month, as your site grows and gets visitors (especially if you're loading pictures, video or music on to your web space) so will your usage.

Upgrade to one of the higher packages and you'll get more included data transfer bundled in.

They'll most likely charge you for the extra BW, maybe you should switch hosts :p

Yeah id change hosts, your bandwidth allowance seems really low.

Decent quality hosting > "unlimited" free for all with barely any support

Vidahost is one of (if not the) best hosting company so i wouldn't change hosts

If you don't have enough bandwidth you could just upgrade to the next package.

Decent Hosting = No need to contact support ;)

If costs are an issue I'd look to host the images else where and keep the raw content on the site.

Costs not an issue I went with Vidahost and for the two years along with my site name I was under 30quid so I'm sure as mentioned above an upgrade to the next package will be what I'll probably do. I was trying to get away from a wap host (around 10euro a year) that i currently have as well but wasn't sure on what to go for so the one I have was the basic package.

You might think that would be the case, but even with a perfect service a hosting provider will be inundated with questions about how to set up email, how to install a plug-in on Wordpress, how to update their Joomla site now that their web developer has left them in the lurch half way through development, how to write SQL queries, how to upload their website files.... :p

Indeed but Decent quality Unlimited hosting > Decent quality hosting.

There is no such thing as decent quality unlimited hosting. By the very definition, it's massively more oversold... :)

Dreamhost's unlimited package has been great for me and their customer support is great too.
