its primary focus is stanalone
with options for PC play

with different configurations and connectivity options.
i read this a lot.... but what makes it primarily standalone and secondary pc?

for clarity i will admit i dont have a quest 3, but i do have a quest 2 and a quest pro, and had use of a quest one.

all of these were primarily used as pcvr headsets, with the added bonus of a bit of standalone as well.

Meta as a company i agree are aimed primarily at standalone... but the quest series as hardware is neither primarily one or the other imo, it is what ever you need it to be

Meta's focus is standalone. They don't publish their own new PCVR games any more, and the PCVR meta store is mostly neglected. But their headsets are very good for PCVR, as they're affordable and capable.

There have been rumours of integration into the headset UI of PC VR titles via the Meta Quest Link system, but I've not seen that yet.

A lot of PCVR enthusiasts use Virtual Desktop over the Meta Link system, as it has more options and can give better quality.

pretty much what Rav said.

Meta's focus isnt pcvr and the titles are all standalone. that their bread and butter, and it makes sense as well its like the google play store but for vr.

i feel they mildly entertain pcvr on their headset because of Guy & VirtualDesktop , then wanted to cut it out by bad practices and it backfired on them badly.
not because they wanted to do it, it wasnt on the road map publicly at least until Guy and even then they did a poor job of trying to copy VD.

even the work and connectivity app took ages to appear. the microsoft remote desktop link, took maybe 6years to appear, 5years after virtual desktop. steam link about 4years after.

we are talking about different things.... yes Meta as a company is (unfortunately) primarily standalone focussed

but the quest headset is just as pc focussed as any other pcvr headset that has optional standalone features. I think it would be a mistake for anyone who wants a pcvr headset to discount the quest headset because the parent company is more focussed on standalone.

bang for buck it is the best pcvr headset currently on sale imo.

Before the Steam Frame, I would have said that what makes the Quest 3 primarily a standalone headset is no display port connection. But the Steam Frame seems to have blurred those lines a little. Of course that depends on whether the wireless in the Steam Frame is actually good enough to replace the wired option completely. So until the Steam Frame is released and tested, I am going with having no wired connection as the thing that makes it primarily standalone :)

Yes, the hardware can be whatever you want it to be, at the moment. Meta is slow to fix problems with Airlink and Link, It's obvious their focus is on standalone. The headset is only as good as the software it runs or is allowed to run. If it wasn't for third party solutions like Virtual Desktop, Steam link, ALVR, etc. PCVR wouldn't be useable for a lot of users. Meta could shut all of them down in the very next update. I don't think they will, but, they do have a very chequered history with PCVR.

bang for buck it is the best pcvr headset currently on sale imo.

Yes, for sure. And it's likely to be still the best bang for buck PCVR headset after the Steam Frame is released.

Disregarding bang for buck, what's the best PCVR headset to match with the likes of a 9070XT?

its the design choices, the display panels are low resolution (by PCVR standards) because the mobile SoC chipset can't drive anything higher and there is no good reason not to have wired DisplayPort connection but they force a link cable with compression artefacts. Everything Meta does is designed to force you onto their store, their platform so they can build a monopoly you can't easily separate the two (hardware and platform) and its designed that way.
