Been out of it for a while .. Prob not done a build in the last 3 years and was wondering what cpu is giving the best bang per buck ATM

Not really on a budget but don't like wasting money either , so I am after a bit of advice as to CPU's in the £80 to £150 region ? but if a little more gains allot more ..

Upgrading a couple of home PCs from E5200s and now awaiting delivery of this lot (X6 not needed but fancied a play with it tbh and SB already hitting prices):

Phenom II 1055T 95W, mobo, 4GB DDR3, Cooler ... this lot for £187+vat

Athlon II X4 640, mobo, 4GB DDR3, Cooler ... this lot for £147+vat

Chuck in a GTX 460 768 and to me that looks like good value ... specially when overclocked, hence the coolers :D

A vote for the i5 2500K from me. Have a look at this review - very in-depth.

Also, this review shows the overclocked performance (using top-end air level cooling) of this new CPU alongside a range of other modern CPUs.

I would go this way for my rig definitely (or the 2600k) and the 2500k looks like setting me back about £350 for cpu/mobo/ram/cooler (a lot less that my i7 920 cost!) About £130 more than the amd 1055t rig I have opted for ... Mmmm, on second thoughts that aint bad actually for what you get but depends on usage really - the difference would pay for a decent video card!

The 2500k rig would last longer though ...

The bit-tech review uses water cooling for the sandy bridge stuff and air for the rest. Not really a fair test tbh:

"Titan Fenrir TTC-NK85TZ CPU cooler, except for LGA1155 systems where we use a Corsair H50 due to the incompability between the Fenrir and Asus P8P67 motherboard"

Cool that seems to have answered that question ..

Would I be right in saying the boards with the AMD 890fx chip are the better ones with the 890G & 890GX being the slightly slower chips ?

Sorry but I really have been out of it for some time.

The H50 is no better than high end air though so it would likely be a reasonable comparison.

When I wrote it I did wonder if this might be the case. I see the tuniq 120 tower is no longer being sold? Oh I feel so outdated. What cpu cooler would you recommend bunging on the sandy bridges when they come out?

WOW:eek::eek: I've just gotten round to reading some proper SB reviews - thanks. Well I thought the i5 2500k would be good, but holy cow not that good!! Can't believe it can beat the 980X in so many non-gaming encoding type tasks where you would expect the extra cores, hyperthreading and tripple channel RAM to actually count for something. Just wow.

Yeah I'm always impressed just how those engineers can improve things and trounce the hard work they put into last years products :)
It's a bit like those Persil adverts where they compare new Persil against last year's Persil and the shirts coming out of the wash are covered in marks and blood...

I often do wonder if the new persil is any better compared to the old. If I ever get really bored one day I will google it.

It's kind of annoying to think they likely have already developed 4ghz etc sb's which are just sitting about waiting 6 months to be shiped off.

Fx does crossfire @16x+16x.........Gx does CF @8x+8x.....GX will be fine for 1 graphics card

I'd recommend the gigabyte 880h ud2h + 555 phenom. Good chance of unlocking it into a quad and it only costs £120. Unless you need your pc for something high end specific I really don't see a better deal atm :D

Lol at ppl saying sb i5, cuz everyone needs to spend £300 just on cpu and mb to do what they need.
