hi all,

i recently paid in over £100 part of which was a £45 cheque this was over a week ago, i have been to check with the bank and they say that no money has been paid into my account i unfortunatly dont have the reciept but i definatly know that the check has been paid into someones account as the money has been taken from the persons account, i am furious with the bank as they will do nothing without that receipt can anyone advise me on what to do as i have over £100 missing and i dont have a clue where it is

Thanks

If you don't have a receipt for cash, you're screwed unless the branch you paid it in can perform an audit and find themselves £55 up. Either that, or someone else being honest notes a mysterious credit applied to their account.

As for the cheque, get the remitter to cancel the cheque and re-issue another. If you kick off enough, your bank should pick up the charges for stopping the cheque, if not, it'll be about a tenner to do so.

Having said that, if the remitter places a trace on the cheque, they'll find out the account to which it's been applied. If this account also has a cash credit of £55 paid in at the branch you were at, at that particular time, your story has weight to it so you'll likely get your cash.

thanks for your info alasdair, i have the check number and bank information, i was owndeing if the bank would still have my paying in form from last week which would proove i paid that money in then when they find the cheque in ******* account then they will hopefully find that the cash has been paid in there too

The easiest way to trace is it via the person who paid in the cheque. They should be able to provide the cheque number, and that is used through the clearing process to trace the cheque. Has the cheque been debited?

i have the cheque number and the amount the cheque was for has been taken out of the cheque writers account and paid into someone elsea account that we dont know if you know what i mean

I trace cheques for living amongst other things.

The easiest way to trace a cheque is with:
Drawers Sortcode:
Drawers Account Number:
Amount:
Date Debited:

or with the Item Sequence Number (ISN). Every clearing item is given a ISN by the bank clearing banks, usually 10 digits longs. Only the processing bank, your bank in this case, can tell you were the cheque has credited.

Ideally, obtain a copy of the cheque from the issuer and give it to your bank and it shouldn't take 5 minutes for them to find it.

I think the problem here is that the issuer won't have a copy of the cheque as it'll currently be within the clearing system somewhere, or lost. Won't the cheque number and remitter details suffice?

I am going to try and contact them about it, bit late now though :p

The money has 100% gone out of my bank though :(

I have sent BBREEZE details such as the cheque number

It only takes 3 days for a cheque to go through the clearing cycle, and bbreezeuk as said the cheque has debited the issuers account. So it should be a problem there. Only problem might be obtaining a copy. Usually £5 to £10 charge.

It depends on how helpful his bank is willing to be. Every branch or group of branches has its own list of remittance to the cheque processing centre. This will include this cheque number etc. So yes it can be enough, but usually bank demand more. As searching through this information can be time consuming.

Just to add, if the cheque has gon ethrough iPSL for clearing, the image is available pretty much straight away. On the rear will be the encoding of the account it's gone to.

Till balances are weekly in most places, but generall, they don't balance any more

On the subject of cheques, I have recieved a cheque from my landlord.

It is addressed to <middlename> <surname> as i'm known as that name.
Can i still cash it given my first name isnt present?

Thanks

No it doesnt.

If I have you a cheque for £100 on monday, I could stop that cheque at 3:29pm on friday, and the funds will be unpaid.

To be safe I'm going to say no, but its really at the head cashiers/cash managers disposal.

Tell me more, as I don’t quite understand where you are coming from.

Are you saying, if I pay in said cheque on the Monday, it would appear as debiting your account on the Wednesday. You would then have up until 15:30 to ask them to return the cheque.

I know on exceptions it can be returned up until 11:00 the next morning.

This is where I am lost.

That's cos you're Barclays and you're rubbish ;) Late returns for us are 2pm on the Thursday

How much is the cheque for? If it's not a great amount, there shouldn't be a problem. It is up to branch at which it is presented though.
