I'm Having a bit of a problem receiving a bank payment and hoped someone could help. I am expecting a bank transfer from someone and have given them my account number, sort code, branch and name on account. They have come back to me saying the account number is two digits short. The account number I have given them is seven digits in length. I thought they may have needed to add two leading zeros to their online payment system, but upon looking at my credit book there is a two digit "trans code" - is this what I need to provide?

All proper UK bank accounts have a 6 digit sort code and an 8 digit account number. When I say proper, I mean a bank that is part of the clearing system. Years ago lots of building societies weren't and they had their whatever numbering system they wanted

....you could always phone up your bank....

Which bank do you use. An old Nat West account by any chance?

Whichever it is, they need to use an 8 digit account number - sticking a single zero in front.

It is a Lloyds TSB business account I have, as you suggest it must be the additional zero needed to make it eight digits. Thanks guys.

I too had a Lloyds TSB business account that required a zero added to the front to make it a proper account number. :)
