I posted some cheques to the bank a week ago, and for some reason the paying in book I use has an accoutn number in it which doesn't exist (even though I've used it plenty of times before - and they printed it in there themselves)

Now the bank have told me that all the cheques would have been returned to the people who wrote the cheques - and that I should get them all cancelled.

This is a major inconvenience for me now as I leave the country on Thursday for a week and only have £5 in my current account! There were 7 cheques in total, just over £2.5k - and chances are I won't be able to get them all back until I get back!

Ouch, thats severly unlucky. I can't believe they returned all the cheques =/ I'd phone them up and have a good chat with them, or go the bank and ask to talk to someone higher than the desk clerk, because it sounds like you need to work miricles!

Well the people said the cheques would have been returned....but she didn't seem to know for sure - no one has received them back yet.

Spike's - I received cheques which I paid in with a paying in book which had the wrong details printed in it by the bank (always used this book) - 5 quid was what I had in the account anyway.

ah, seems to make a bit more sence now. sorry.

Thats why you stand there and check the details thoroughly, especially for that amount. Someone paid in 35k and the woman at the bank put in 3.5k...^^ good thing they checked it! Live and learn!

Whether or not the cheques have been returned you will get your money one way or another. If they have been cleared the bank will have 2.5k extra on their hands and theyll know somethings gone wrong.
