Lol they took two weeks each time to just tell me "turn off your firewall" :| not impressed one bit.

Well if you're unplugged your router I'm not surprised it's not working :p

Not sure if you've tried it or not, but go HERE, select your router and make sure you have the correct ports forwarded to your machine.

How does your network work? Does it go:
PC > Modem > Router ?

Read the posts in the thread, he's tried pretty much everything.

Very deductive of you there, Davey - but he certainly hasn't specified whether or not he has a modem, so my question still stands. :)

I presume you're able to log into your account on a machine not associated with your network? IE from a friends house.

Yes.

And yes I play on Dod on my account at my m8s house.

And no hes right I have tried everything, but if you have any suggestions your welcome and if you have the cure for this ridiculous "generic" error, please tell me.

I shouldn't have to do that, however yes I've tried different PC's on the network, same error. Yes I've reformatted like 10 times since Steam hasn't been working (a year or so). So my system is clean and Steam never works on any of the PC's on my network (3). And yes I've tried everything so nothing works.

Oh noes I have 50,000 hardware firewalls I shouldn't have to turn them off to get steam to work..it should just work! It's such a pile of ****! 99.99% of the people using steam must be so lucky as it works for them...how lucky can they be :(

Doesn't that suggest it's at YOUR end?

Wtf are you on about, just go back to sleep.

But Xfire is nothing to do with Steam is it really? I don't see a reason why they should support Xfire in that way. Glad you got it sorted though.

Macabre, will you drop the hostilities - I'm actually racking my brain here thinking of how to help...

When you play DoD at your friends house, do you take your PC? Or does he have a spare that you use? If you take your PC, the problem is definitely your modem, router or connection.

Couple of things to try:
*Let him bring his router round yours - see if that works.
*Try replacing the cables going from your PC > Modem, Modem > Router, Router > phone line - one of them may be faulty. I've had it in the past where a faulty CAT5 cable caused major disconnecting issues in WoW, but in no other games.

Macabre's problem is he's tried 3 different PCs, with and without the router I believe.

The only thing that I could see the problem being is with the modem really, or the cables for the modem.

I understand your frustration Macabre and suggest you start from the beginning and open a New thread. It really does have to be something your end and starting afresh from the beginning may help you resolve your issues.

Personally i rate Steam highly and i don't play much these days either so Cannot be accused of being a fan boy.
Whenever i do it is the Only prog to take advantage of my connection properly. Games run as smooth as silk my end and i have Never had a Single problem with Any of there games. My pings are below 10 and high for me playing source is a 20 ping :p
Updating the games is a breeze you just fire it up and let it work away no problems at all and no searching around for patches.
I really cannot fault them.

I think he was aiming the hostility at my sarcasm :)

Have you checked little things like windows firewall, network settings and maybe double check you ISP? Maybe they've changed something which the customer services guy wasn't aware of.

Take your PC to your mates. If it works, it's your modem\ISP. If it doesn't, it's the setup on your PC.

No he has 3 PC's on his router, but his dad set it up. And I can't take his router because they use it and need it for online gaming etc. And no I don't take my PC, he has Steam installed and I just play on my own account while he plays the 360 or on the other comp.

It updates fine the platform updates but I can't log in and its damn annoying, why couldn't I get a straight forward error?

Pointless opening a new thread no one replies lol.

M8, honestly im not messing with things, im not trying to be awkward with any of you, but everythings working perfect. I play ANY GAME no problem without even having to port forward it just works, every program but Steam works, all my games online work with no issues and everythings running smooth but Steam. Yes I want it fixed but im not risking making a p'up of things.
