Is it crap?

I've never had a part time job in my life. I'm considering one now. More a pub then a bar but still, looking around.

I'm in exactly the same situation, never worked part time more than a paper round but am looking for bar work.
I think it will be a job that has high and low points..great social job, chat to customers and such, but a bit crap when it comes to cleaning, getting abused by drunks, etc etc.

The trick is to offer to sweep / mop up after hours - this way you get to pick up all the money all of the drunks dropped on the floor. I know a guy who would litterally pick up £20 extra a night just by doing this!

Any bar/club/pub work is great fun at times, and grubby and difficult at others. I would highly recommend it, but long term, as has been pointed out, the hours don't make for much personal social time.

Its awesome, but you get paid crap :)

Its not that bad! for a part time job i get £6 and hour for working in a night club.

and hours are really un socialble

So called un-socialble but the most social hours you will probably work

IMO bar work is amazing! thats be because of where i work and the people i work with, and the fact ive been taught how to free pour and how to mix cocktails and the likes.

Money has nothing to do with it :).

Have you done it? Why is it awesome?

Worked in a bar since I was 18, you will never find a better place to find girls, aslong as you're not a complete tool or anything.

Are you thinking of doing this with another job or just as something for fun?

As you will find you will drink during the week on days off, go to parties etc.

Not much personal social time is exactly what I need right now, and the main reason I want to look at a part time job over weekends.

Got to be some pubs hiring in Cambridge.

No lie, sometimes walking through at the end of the night i will find screwed up notes lying around! One of the many perks

If thats the case I would pick the busiest student bar going, the place everyone goes to.

I did it for three years while I was at uni/looking for a real job.

It can be a lot of fun if you get on with the people you work with, but with the abuse from customers, long hours, difficulties getting home after a shift and the crap pay you can also do better elsewhere!

I met my girlfriend at my last bar though (worked with her) so I guess that place wasn't that bad.

(Hope that keeps her happy)

I used to work behind a bar part-time.

Advantages
- Hot women trying to chat you up
- Sexeh women in general
- Work isn't that involved
- Good laugh
- Free drink
- Tips / finding cash

Disadvantages
- Drunk men :/
- Hours aren't great (10pm-4am)
- You smell like pap at the end of the night
- Restocking fridges & cleaning at the end of the shif
- Loud music = tinnitus

I used to work 3pm - 10pm at Tesco, then drive straight in to town and change in to my bar clothes and work 10:30pm - 4am

Your level of tiredness may vary accordingly ;)
