Has anyone here been to Barbados during the Hurricane season? :D We're contemplating the caribbean for our summer holiday, but we obviously want good weather. I know it's a bit of a educated risk.

September is pushing the end of the hurricane season but its not unknown for some big ones at that time. Could you not do October (just a little later)?

TBH I don't think October is really missing the hurricanes any more. I've jsut come back from Cuba and the locals were saying they have really noticed the season getting longer each year and is now pushing into November.

What do you want people to say? You might get a hurricane, you might not. If you do your holiday will most likely be ruined, if not then you'll probably have a great time.

I was there last August. Arrived 2 days after hurricane Dean flattened St Lucia. My two weeks were fine - it's more humid that time of year and rains more but there was still plenty of sun :)

Yup, went for three blissful weeks at the start of September in 2002, like Richard said it rains a bit more but that comes as a relief and never lasts that long. Best bit is there is a distinct lack of merkin tourists there at that time.

Went to Jamaica last June, had a great time. Weather was fantastic. Rained every day, but when it rains it will absolutely chuck it down for 15 minutes and then the sun will be out straight after, just as hot as before.

Did that once in the dominican, was an amazing shower. the clouds looked like they would be around for days, yet were gone in minutes. the rain was warm as well.
A nice experience while staying in the pool :D

I was under the impression the Hurricane season now stretches from late July right into November! We got hit by a storm in Mexico in September, which pretty much ruined the holiday, so I'd really rather not a repeat experience :D. I've heard that Barbados tends to miss the worse effects due to it's location. But there is always that one time.. I've got a great photo from Mexico, check it out. I just wanted some advice that was all!

They have a saying:

June=Too soon

July=Stand By

August=Come it must

September=Remember

October=All over

Barbados had a really bad one in 1955 with hurricane janet, and one in 1980
with hurricane allen, so they seem to get really hit bad avery 25 years or so which suggests they are slightly overdue for one :(

The advantage is that Barbados is set slightly apart (about 100 miles) from the main antilles chain and doesn't seem to get it...there will be tropical storms at that time of year which, while not as destructive, do pack a punch.

I've been there twice now during feb/march and you do get strong showers, but they soon pass and it ain't exactly england is it? :cool:

Beautiful country and so many friendly people, coming from the uk it can be a bit off-putting lol...hire a car for a couple of days and get to see the island, particularly in the north (St Lucy) and the east coast down to Bathsheba...or just get lost, its easy to do and great fun...but then you won't truly be lost because you are in Barbados :D

...my last trip was one of the best I have ever spent abroad (and I've been to about 14-15 countries)....i'll tease the op with a coupla pix...
