My wife and I are off to Florida next week so I thought I'd call my banks to let them know. I called First Direct first, gave them the dates we were away and asked if they could put a note on our joint account that we would be in the states. All fine with no problems whatsoever.

Next I ring Barclays with the same info only to be told that they could do it for me but not my wife. I was told that as out names were different she would have to call herself. I have all my wife's details here and don't see the problem, it's not as if I'm trying to get anything from them. I'm just trying to inform them that we will be away. Then the guy started to quote data protection so I lost the plot a bit (no swearing though - been to anger management at work :) )and told him to forget it. Rant over.

why won't she have your name?

Well they are just being responsible with security. For all they know you could have split up and you are trying to raid her accounts.

That said, its more to protect their own butts. But this is true of many banks.

I'm with Barclays, and I once got a call from their fraud team regarding an online game sub. On the other hand there was no issue when I travelled the best part of 200 miles and purchased a car for cash on my Debit card.

So I'm not sure how they flag things up to be honest.

I'd much prefer they ask for two people with different names to confirm their own information than just take things at the word of a potentially random person who phones up.

You could have just got her details out of a bin?

Sounds like you should be trusting Barclays with you money more than First Direct tbh...

+1 Barclays

You would have been here having a much bigger rant if someone transfered money out of your account because they had your wifes details.

Barclays know im cheap when I tried to pay for 2 nights in an expensive hotel they blocked the payment... no issue I thought I'll pay cash... however the hotel refued to take cash!!!

They were just doing their job tbh, as frustrating as it is.

I know with HSBC you can do this online now which makes it easier.

Was Barclays also a joint account?

If not it is only right and proper they would not let you deal with her account, unless she had previously registered you as authorised you to manage her accounts (this normally requires the two of you to go into a branch).
