Barcode automation and Word help

I'm trying to work out a way of typing a number in to a Word document then as you type that in Word automatically converts this in to a barcode in another part of the document, is this possible?

I've found several solutions,but they all refer to using third party website to be able to enter text then save the barcode, I need a more seamless solution than this!

So you basically just want a barcode font? Most barcode fonts aren't free but Code39 and Code128 (I think) and are widely supported.

Not really, I want to type a reference number in to a field, and this be generated as a bar code and appear in another part of the document

There is no real 'automated' for this to happen, you would need to type the code then convert it, at least as far as im aware thats how it will work.

I've found a way, but it means that the form has to be locked to work - so you can't enter text in to any other part of the document, which is a little, errm, inconvenient!

You can do it using a bookmark and cross-reference. It's a little messy though as it's not completely automatic, you need to manually refresh the field but you can just hit ctrl-a to select everything and then F9 to update the fields.

You can have the cross-reference in a different font so that it would appear as the bar code.
