Barebones Setup for ESX Server

Hi guys,

I am looking to build a barebones system to use as an ESX server just for running vms, i wondered if anyone have done this already and had any advice?

The storage controller and onboard NIC are supported, would Freenas work as a VM on ESX 4.0 i was hoping to have one extra box i could use as a vsphere box and NAS at the same time. Main use for the NAS would be film store which then get streamed to my Media box.
