This isn’t a post looking for sympathy, it’s a post urging anyone who has a concern about a spot or skin blemish that looks suspicious, is getting bigger and not going away to get checked.

I was diagnosed with a BCC on my face a couple of weeks ago and had a small op to deal with it. It started as what I thought was a regular spot about 4 years ago beside my nose, under my eye. It healed over but came back every now and then. At its best it just looked like a small chicken pox scar, recently at its worse it would look quite red and angry.

I’ve never been a big sun guy, I can burn it if not careful though. I thought skin cancer is something that happens to sun worshipers.

The consultant asked if I used a lot of sun beds when I was younger; I didn’t. I did do a lot of fishing as a younger boy and consultant thinks perhaps sun exposure over those years has lead to this today.

I will be left with a small scar which is a small price to pay, hopefully get the all clear soon. It’s the first time I’ve needed local anaesthetic for as long as I can remember and I will admit the prospect of the op and a scar had me scared. I was in denial. The op wasn’t pleasant but it wasn't as bad as I feared; I had no choice.

If one person who reads this post books an appointment to get checked then it will have been worthwhile. Stay safe. Wear sun cream and make sure your loved ones do too.

I have an ultra rare skin condition around my eyes, which I had a bcc removed from eyelash line 15 months ago. See the consultant every 9-12 months.

If the growths aren’t removed in time, the bcc’s can turn into skin cancer - ie cancer goes onto skin below growth. Which could potentially lose my eye.
