Base component selection, Ryzen5

So, my kids PC decided to blow its guts today. About time as its i5-2500k.
I find myself a BIT behind times when it comes to choosing base components for new build. Mostly trying to find a balance between longevity and performance (i5 had a nice long run :D ).

I want to get Ryzen5, motherboard for it, 16gb of ram and air cooler to suit cpu/mobo/ram combo. Rest is old bits that i have on hand - case, 650w PSU, ssd drives, gtx980ti. Dont care for overclocking.

What would be the most current tech on tight budget i can get ? Advice is really appreciated.

This time i'm giving my money to team red. Intel is gonna sit this one out.
Read up a bit on things and i want to keep to r5-5600x, as for motherboard, i will be reusing old sata ssd's and a 980ti in it.
Motherboard has to have 4 ram slots, with 2 slots filled by 2x8gb, leaving potential to add more later.
As for pci lane speed, i'm not sure, the 980ti might go, or i might want to add another one to sli, or something. (new gpus are definitely out, not until market comes back to its senses...)...

I'm thinking opposite way - make base strong for a long run, add expensive bits later. I need to figure out what can i cram into 400 (+-) quid that will scale better with addition of new gpu's/ram in the future. I did the same with 2500k and still alive workstation with 2600k - gpus were rubbish (8800?), but later upgraded. Lasted me a looong time. :D Granted my motherboard in i7 rig cant take nvme's, so i just slapped in an adapter to accomodate it, but i still play a bit of Just Cause 3-4, Path of Exile, Arc, etc... And that rig is covered in moss, 10 years old :D Trying to replicate this...

Todays 6 core is equivalent to a dual core from 2011, the 2500K was the 2nd best chip at the time so todays equivalent is the 5900X and thats the chip to buy if you want it to last 10 years.

Checked out the price of 5900x and noped out real quick. Even 5800x is eating most of the budget. Think i'll stay with 5600x for kids pc, will be going 5900x for my main workstation (Corel / Laser cutting graphics prep / occasional GIMP/PS job).

That's why I suggested the cheap Bgrade 3600 for £140 or less if you make them an offer and then go for a 5900X in a couple of years when it's going for what the 5600X is going for now.

I initially started looking at it with 3600 in mind, but knowing how long i keep my tech alive i'm not sure i want one gen old tech to start with. This is why my old tech stayed old - no compatibility inter-generationally with intel - you get sandy, you stay with sandy. I just learned that, apparently, i can drop different gen's in the same motherboard with amd ? This confuses me a bit, to tell the truth...

Ok, recalculating... :D

3600x
550(+?) mobo, as futureproof as possible (r7-r9?)
2x8gb ram
air cooler

What motherboard then in this scenario ? So tat when the time comes i can just drop in fatter cpu of 5000+ ?

Is there a marked real difference between 3600 and 3700 ? Just looking at b grade stuff and considering if +2 cores worth 50 quid ? :D

#Edit# Correction - 60 quid difference

I'm looking at x570 because pcie4.
Looking at 3700x and its +2 cores and 65w tdp ? 3600x is 6 cores and 95w ? what gives ? And no non-b-grade 3700x's in the shop ? Why ?

Recalculating again...
Comments on mobo ?

Dont really care about it as i have very airy case - ancient Antec900 with a MASSIVE fan going on top of it (200mm ?). Not going for a silent build. More interested in the mobo's overall futureproof-ness...

#Edit# and need it all quickish, lest my kids rip my head off in blind withdrawal from Ark rage :D

I'm not wading into 2000 series as my goal is to be as new as possible hence 3700x, x570 because potential zen3+ and pcie4. Budget went up a bit but not by much.

My, hopefully final, recalculation (comments ?):

Thank you all that helped me with this. Parts ordered. Kids will be happy and i will be envious (still running moss covered i7-2600k)... Cant wait for it to croak, otherwise cant justify the expense... :D

Nice did you go for the 8 core in the end ?

Yes i did. This time i was more interested in getting a better motherboard to be honest. Last time big upgrade was done on a basis of a good cpu (i7-2600k) that i still run today. But since zen is so switcheable i decided to go for a better base to switch into.
8 core was because it was heavily discounted this time. Figured i wont need to worry about replacing it for a good while, while 6-cores are already being phased out.

When my i7 workstation croaks i'll be going the same route - expandable/futureproof mobo and latest'ish cpu, with view to drop in even better cpu in there later.

While Intel had a good long run i was absolutely tied in to that gen without any other options to go through short of replacing ALL base elements of the build (CPU/Mobo/RAM).
