Basic advice on how to best wire a simple home network

Hello everyone, I hope you are well. Thanks for reading my post.

My PC is in my bedroom along with some other multimedia and my bt master socket is in the living room. I live in a small flat. I originally had my talktalk router beside my pc and I then ran an Ethernet cable from router in bedroom to master socket. I now realise this was wrong and so have moved router to beside master socket in living room and am running Ethernet from router to pc. I also noticed the rubbish flat adsl wire that goes from router to master sock is not good so have replaced that.
I'm only on max 17 mb download from talktalk but will be upgrading.

Anyway, the wires are a bit unsightly currently and I was wondering instead of running 1 continuous cable from router in livingroom to pc in bedroom, could I install an Ethernet faceplate in each room and then use Ethernet patch cable to connect both router and pc to face plates or will this mean that degredation will be introduced doing it this way?

At the moment I just have direct Ethernet wires travelling from router to pc and multimedia devises in livingroom and bedroom but they are all ran along skirting and door ways. Have been like this for some time and because of this there are a few kinks I'm sure in the cat 5e, more importantly the wife hates the look and is giving head ear/headache.

I stream sports and movies but as I reach only 11mb download with talktalk, coupled with crappy network cables I hurridly installed some years back means as soon as I try to get basic hd720 on my pc there is major lag due to not enough bandwidth.
As stated I have started moving the router to where it should be. I am going to buy some new cat5e,better quality although not sure if I should get cat6 (might be a need to loop cable in couple of places) and I am switching isp providers and upping to 38mb speeds.

I just don't want to hardwire my home setup wrong and was looking for advice on the use of wall faceplates connected by patch cables. I was thinking that if all the cables are same standard I should be ok but then again was thinking if there are 3 cables instead of 1 going from router to pc etc then this might reduce quality of the broadband.

Thank you in advance. The help is much appreciated. I have been deliberating over this for weeks, back and forth and making no headway. Driving me nuts. Don't know if router/modem combi plus multimedia devices where enough or if I need other things. Its just a simple network I require.

Ps, can anyone recommend a decent place to buy networking cables.

Change the 'number of modules' to suit the type you want.
1 or 2 will give you a single gang faceplate

3 or 4 will give you a double gang faceplate

100M or 305M cat5e cable.

You'll need a punchdown tool too and a cable stripper.

-edit, this is the best cable you can get from BT port to router.

Is it worth my while buying shielded cat5e? Should I consider cat6? The max I'm considering going to is 38mb so my sports isn't continually buffering. Can anyone recommend a not so expensive but competent switch. My router (which im sure you will agree with me in saying is pish) is HUAWEI_HG633. So dont wanna spend more on the switch than the router is worth lol
Cheers for the free advice btw people. Much appreciated.

If it was a brand new build and you were fitting 24 sockets during build stage, I'd say use cat6.

Since you're adding it to a current house, use cat5e non shielded. So much easier to work with.
