Basic but good 13" laptop

My sister is looking for a 13"ish laptop for word processing and a little photo editing.

There seems to be a real lack of good 13" laptops around at the moment though. We are currently looking either at a 128GB MBA or a Surface 3. Any other options we should be considering?

It needs to be light and have a reasonable battery life, max of around £800-900.

I have a dell xps 13 - I really like it. Even after having it a year - there are not many models that can beat it: screen, weight (portability) -

In the states currently and spent some time playing with the surface 3 - don't get me wrong its a nice laptop.
But noticed these things - keyboard wont be as good as a regular keyboard ie dell, wont be as lapable (although the dells fans are located at the bottom so this comes into play also.
The detachable screen is actually a bit big and bulky but better then what else is out there considering the 12 inch and resolution.
