Hi there,

Can someone tell me how to ensure everything on my IPOD is backed up on my PC?

Currently when I open ITUNES I see nothing but when I connect my IPOD I see all the tracks and video's in ITUNES.

I know I need a large amount of space to back it all up I have that :-)

Also, can someone please tell me where to obtain the best sports, news, tech news, movies and what's on guide video or audio podcasts?

Thanks a million

When you plug your Ipod into the computer if you click on the Ipod in the left hand menu
then on the 1st page click "Sync Automaticly" then when the Ipod is plugged in everything
will be transfered to your Pc/Mac Automaticly and will be added into your music/movie
library etc etc.......

where is stored in my PC? how can I choose which folder my music / movies are automatically stored in?

Right, If any of this is wrong guys, let me know.

Basically, The first thing to remember is that iTunes DOES NOT store your media within itself. iTunes merely references the files that are stored somewhere on your own harddisk.

If you connect your iPod and sync it should copy it's content back to the pc.

From this point on:

The media from the iPod, If I am right about this, should be now listed in the appropriate sections of your iTunes Library. (The top section of iTunes left hand bar)

If you open a library section ie: music and double click a track it should play. You can see the fact it is being referenced by rightclicking the track and selecting "Get Info" and looking for "Location". The location section will tell you where abouts on your hard disk the actual file is being stored.

This is usually somewhere within:

C:\Users\$username$\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\and\so\on

If you move a file that iTunes if referencing from it's location within the folder I wrote above and then try to open it from within iTunes, it should display a little exclamation mark stating that it cannot be found.

ALSO

You can store your media wherever you wish on your pc, basically move the actual files to where you want them, delete the old no longer needed reference from iTunes and then drag the file from windows explorer into the iTunes window to let iTunes create the new reference.

It would be preferable to open the iTunes Preferences window and look at all the options carefully as some may impact on your ability to do the above.

I hope that helps a little. I'm not an expert with iTunes myself but have just found things out whilst playing about with it myself

Thanks

Neil

rctneil that is pretty much how it works yeh,

you can tell Itunes were u want the music and movie etc etc to be stored though by
going to the preferences and then changing the directory in which it saves the music to.

Also you can tell Itunes to save the music and movies etc etc so that if they are moved
then Itunes will still pick the music up.

To do all this you go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced Tab

the top box is were the music is stored and then under that there is a tick box that
says copy music to the Itunes folder which is the folder you have selected were your
media is to be stored.

Basically the way I have done it is to tell iTunes NOT to organise my media. I WANT TO MANAGE AND ORGANISE IT.

I ahve all my music in a custom music folder all organised and manually tagged correctly by myself and I tell iTunes to look in that folder. Videos are the same.

Now for podcasts, iOS apps and other stuff, iTunes stores those in it's own iTunes media folder.

I DO NOT let iTunes move or manage any of my media apart from the stuff listed.

This is juts how I personally do it and it works perfectly for me.

FYI iTunes does not allow you to reverse sync your iPod, IE. move the files from your iPod to your iTunes library. 3rd party programs can do this, not iTunes.

ok, Thanks. Forget that bit in my post and use SharePod to transfer the music off your current iPod. You can then use the iTunes import feature where iTunes will automatically copy it into it's own directly structure as i spoke of, or organise it manually and store it wherever you want on your pc and drag them itno the iTunes window.

sharepod has only backed up my tracks, it doesnt seem to have taken my movies, podcasts or playlists...

I want to now "sync" my IPOD with ITUNES so that ITUNES automatically manages my media from my folder but am worried because ITUNES first deletes everything from the IPOD and then takes everything from the libray, but SHAREPOD does not seem to have copied everything like i said above

what do i do?

Hmm, I go an think of something to solve this now.

I wouldn't worry about podcasts at all though as you can find them in the itunes store within iTunes and subscribe to them and redownload each podcast if you wish.

I'll post again when I find a solution
